If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land. - 2 Chronicles 7:14

I'm trying to use this verse for a friend who's life is out of control. It's possible I'm using the wrong verse but none the less it's a very powerful message, and I need help breaking it down for her to understand how God can change her life.

God Bless you for helping your friend...

That scripture is very powerful..
God led you to that scripture to help your friend. Lets break it down.
We are to humble ourselves when we pray, we are to be like an innocent child.
A person who does not repent of their sins and accept Jesus as their personal Savior will not inherit the Kingdom of Heaven.
Satan cannot inhabit those who are in Christ because we are all sealed for the day of redemption (Eph. 4:30) but he can use us for his purpose if he gains our cooperation. Sometimes we aren't aware we are cooperating.
Read in Daniel about Nebachadnezzar, how he was brought down because of his false security... He was wicked and God brought him to his knees and he finally repented.. email me and we can talk further with scriptures

First of all this verse is for believers- is your friend a believer? Forgiveness of sin and healing of our land can only happen if we as God's people humble ourselves and pray. We are the ones that need to seek His face and turn from our wicked ways. God hears from heaven when we do this. If your friend is a believer than you can say that this verse asks us to humble ourselves before God and then if we do this, then He will show us what to do next and how He will choose to heal.
If you friend is not a believer, you need to take her to scripture that talks about giving your life to Jesus.

It's not a bad verse. The problem is that people either have the reciever in them, or they do not.

The verse that you show starts with the words 'If my people', so those that are called 'his' people, would turn to him and ask him, and ' pray and seek my face' want to know him and begin with the act of faith which prayer is, 'turn from their wicked ways' the children of Israel were worshipping idols-- so it is to him they would turn to turning their backs to their idols, 'then I will forgive their sin and heal their lands' being a promise of God for faith-- revealing that God never changes. Jesus is the same exact way. He rewards faith and does not reward doubt or trust in idols.

But if you friend is not going to turn to him, not being one of his, then God will not comfort him. The main question is; Do you want to know God? If the answer is yes, then there is hope. A person cannot want to know God unless God is guiding them to him.

John 6:44
No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.

I did some reading research b-4 I answered.
This is during the time of Solomon's reign.

Jehovah is w/ Solomon "making him surpassingly great",
Jah appears 2 him @ night, and says 2 him
"Ask! What shall I give you?" Solomon asked for knowledge and wisdom in order to govern Jah's ppl properly
B-cuz of his unselfish request, God promises to give not only knowledge & wisdom but also wealth & riches and honor "such as no kings that were prior to you happened to have, and no such 1 after u will come to have"
Solomon has so much, even the queen Sheba had heard of him and it* (*the wisdom ,wealth etc..).
Solomon has a temple built and during the dedication 'Jehovah's glory itself fills the house'.

U didn't say exactly what is going on in ur friends life...but
Matt. 6:33--seek Kingdom 1st
Ps. 103:13,14--He knows us well
Neh. 9:17--U r a God of acts of forgiveness
2 Pet. 3:9,15--Jah is not slow,but patient
Ps. 37:10,11--Just a lil while longer
Isa. 9:6,7--there has been a child born 2 us
2 Cor. 4:13,16--given fresh strength
Even when our own lives r out of control,
there is 1 who cares for and about u, us, all of us.
Start turning ur attention to Him, and
He will turn His attention 2 U

God is asking us to pray and seek Him which is our way of communicating with God. Humbling ourselves and avoiding sin makes it easier for us to seek God and for Him to "hear" our prayers.
When we can put aside our pride and sins and seek Him then He will hear us and forgive our sins.

Good luck with your friend

Another great Verse is

Jeremiah 29:11 "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future."

Well this verse is directed specifically to saints. "My people" christians is who God is speaking to. However I would suggest using this verse with John 3:16, 1 Corinthians 1:9, and Romans 5:8

Great scripture for the need! I would look for other similar verses and 'walk through them' with my friend. If you have a reference Bible, they should be readily available for you, if you don't have one, drop me an email and I will get them to you. DO use the scriptures, God says specifically that 'My Word will not fail, it will accomplish exactly what I want it to!' (serious paraphrase there :)) I wish you well in this endeavor, and know that you and your friend are being prayerfully lifted before the throne of Grace, even now.

If it's a rough time, try Ps 119:71, too. Also, check out Jer 29:11 for a truly great verse on God's will/plan for your life and finding comfort in that.

I think you have already gotten some really good responses. Jeremiah 29:11 is posted on my desk.

Be sure to pray and seek God for wisdom before you talk with your friend. Pray that she will allow Him to open her heart to what you have to say. If we do it all on our own it will not turn out right. I am praying with you. :)

It is hard to take one verse out of context and apply it to anyone's life.

Within the context of the Chapter it means:

"God gave a gracious answer to Solomon's prayer. The mercies of God to sinners are made known in a manner well suited to impress all who receive them, with his majesty and holiness. The people worshipped and praised God. When he manifests himself as a consuming Fire to sinners, his people can rejoice in him as their Light. Nay, they had reason to say, that God was good in this. It is of the Lord's mercies we are not consumed, but the sacrifice in our stead, for which we should be very thankful. And whoever beholds with true faith, the Saviour agonizing and dying for man's sin, will, by that view, find his godly sorrow enlarged, his hatred of sin increased, his soul made more watchful, and his life more holy. Solomon prosperously effected all he designed, for adorning both God's house and his own. Those who begin with the service of God, are likely to go on successfully in their own affairs. It was Solomon's praise, that what he undertook, he went through with; it was by the grace of God that he prospered in it. Let us then stand in awe, and sin not. Let us fear the Lord's displeasure, hope in his mercy, and walk in his commandments."*

Basically the verse is God's Conditional Promise to Solomon in answer to his prayer at the dedication of the Temple.
