I noticed a girl yesterday wearing flip flops and work clothes at the coffee shop yesterday. It occurred to me that I had not been noticing a lot of flip flops around the office for a while. Last year, I was getting annoyed by the nearly constant, sweaty sounding "smack smack" of an endless parade of flip flops around the office. I have always found them WAY inappropriate for most work environments - very tacky.
Is the craze finally gone, or on its way out?

Why worry about other's footwear? Because the sound can be annoying, and in an office setting, they are overly casual. It's like why worry about people wearing cutoff shorts in an accounting, medical or legal office?

God, I hate flipflops... please make them go away..... they are beach shoes and shoes to keep you from getting fungus at the gym..... You shouldn't be like, "nice to meet you Mr. so-and-so, flip flip smack smack, oh ... take a look at my dirty feet...."

Fllip flops just don't look good with jeans. They look tacky and they do not flatter a woman's foot. For some reason feet look fat and chubby, or wide and blocky in them.

I'm sorry you hate them so much, they're loads better than closed shoes. It shouldn't matter what someone is or isn't wearing on their feet, in an office or coffee shop or anywhere apart from places like construction sites. I think flipflops will remain as long as people care about being comfortable and letting their feet breathe!

Flip flops are still worn in an office setting.
I've noticed it's usually the heavier girls that wear the flip flops since wearing dress shoes hurt their feet. However, their thinner female coworkers seem to have no problem wearing dressy shoes all day.

If you hate them so much, don't wear them. It's that simple. What other people choose to wear on their feet is not your concern.
No, I don't wear them at work. I wear heavy work boots. But when I'm off duty, especially in the spring, summer and fall, I wear them all the time.
Flip flops are NOT some craze. Where have you been? I've been wearing them all my life...all 37 years of it.

Nope! :) Flip-flops will never fully go out of style, since they're so easy and comfortable to wear during hot weather.
The reason you're hearing less smack-smack sound of flip-flops, might be because the STYLE of flip-flops has changed slightly. These days, a platform or wedge heel version of the flip-flop is the trend. Also, flip-flops aren't just made of rubber anymore...they are also being made of alternative materials, such as cork, wood, etc.

I can't believe employers allow people to wear flip flops to work! Don't get me wrong, I love them, but I would never wear them to work.
Regarding the girl you saw at the coffee shop...maybe she was on her way to work and the flip flops were more comfortable than the shoes she was wearing to the office that day. There is nothing wrong with that.

Flip flops at work...goodness. Flip flops are designed to wear to the beach not to work. I agree, it is very tacky to wear at work.

Around here pretty much everyone still wears flip-flops.
But then again, I live in Georgia, so I don't expect the trend to go out.
I actually wear flip-flops every day.
Hahah.
But they don't really make the sound.
If any shoe trend needs to go out,
it's CROCS.

I never understood why it is that people worry about others wearing flip flops? People don't like to wear shoes. Big deal.

Well it was winter for a while so those of us in New England weren't wearing them. Trust me, though, we're pulling them back out and smack, smack, smacking our way into summer.
I was actually thinking of stopping on the way home for a new pair. Leather. Orange or green. What do you think?

As long as they make them I will wear them. I love the sound they make. What makes me sick is to see people with a ton of dirt under their toenails wear them.
