Good question. Our soul is part of who we are. We are made up of three parts, body, spirit, and soul. They are one, but separate. It is easy to see our body because it is who we are physically. It is a vehicle for our soul and our spirit. The difference between our soul and spirit is quite a different story. The spirit influences what we say and our desires. It brings our bodies knowledge. Without a spirit, we would not be able to live. The soul is who we are and what we think. When we turn from our sins and receive Jesus as our Lord and Savior, God removes our spirit and replaces it with the Holy Spirit, God Himself. At that moment we are saved. That is why we are called "Born Again." We are not the same, we are a new creature, because we have a new Spirit. That Spirit changes us by changing our desires. He leads and guides us. He comforts us and teaches us. It is up to us to be obedient to the Spirit to be sanctified and if we remain faithful unto Jesus, then someday our bodies will be raised from the dead and we will be given immortal, glorified bodies to spend eternity in Heaven with God as our Father and all those who received His Love and Forgiveness through Jesus, His Son..

What is a "soul"?
These four people are four souls.
"And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul." Genesis 2:7.
Answer: A soul is a living being. A soul is always a combination of two things: body plus breath. A soul cannot exist unless body and breath are combined. God's Word teaches that we are souls.

The idea of an individual soul is an illusion. There is only ONE SOUL in various forms and names. That is God.The qualities which the ordinary mind can think of is that Soul is Consciousness pure. Impure Consciousness is Mind. Impure Mind is the individual Soul and prompts to action to suffer the reaction.

1-Physical body
2-Etheric body (vital forces - life)
3-Astral body (desire body)
4-Manasic body (mental, concious thoughts)
5-Budhic body (inspiration, intuition)
6-Atmic body (Atma, Invincible soul)
7-Monadic Body (paramatma, God)
The soul is generally what arrises as the dynamic between Spirit and Matter but I find the above enumeration better for understanding.
Each 'sheath' communes through the channels above and below it, e.g., desires are impacted upon from the etheric body below and the manasic thoughts from above. spiritual progress ias then about clearing and developing all these channels so there is a clear passage from God to the physical world and back up again.
The etheric, astral, manasic and budhic , make up the Jiva, or individualised soul. These lower bodies fall away at and after death upto the Atma and are in turn recreated pending a new incarnation.

The entire vedic scriptures are meant to understand about this Soul ,Its creator & their relationship.
Its really a good question.Soul is made of pure consciousness, mind, intelligence & ego.Its the living force which makes the dead matter or simply matter move or grow.
Dimensions of a soul is compared the size of a 1/10,000th tip of a hair.It cannot be burnt, wet, killed, cut, seperate, split etc.
This is just a small description,an entire text is available Bhagavat Gita as it is.You can get more info at www.krishna.com

It depends on your view of humanity; Monism or Dualism
Monism
Definition: Gk. monos, “one” or “alone.” The teaching that the spirit, soul, and body are all essentially the same or that the spirit and soul do not exist without the body. This often goes by the name “soul sleep.”
Adherents: Jehovah’s Witnesses, Christian Scientists, Christadelphians, J.A.T. Robertson, neo-orthodoxy.
Dualism: The understanding that the constitution of man is pluralistic in nature, since there is an intermediate state of existence to which the immaterial/immortal part(s) of man goes to await the resurrection.
Adherents: Most of Orthodox Christianity.
• Dichotomy: Gk. dicha, “two parts” and temno, “to cut.” The teaching that man is made up of two essential parts: material (body), and nonmaterial (soul/spirit).
Material: All that is physical.
Non-material: Spirit, soul
Adherents: Augustine, John Calvin, Hodge, most of historic orthodox Christianity.
• Trichotomy: Gk. trikha, “three parts,” and temno, “to cut.” The teaching that man is made up of three essential parts: body, soul, and spirit.

God breathed into Adam and he became a living soul.
Body + Breath = Soul or Spirit
The soul is God's breath without it we do not have life. The soul is not a seperate entity from the body.
Soul is translated as breath in the Bible.
