after prophet Muhammad assumed lordship over Medina, his followers increased. after the prophet ascended to heaven from Jerusalem, there was a question of his succession. one group said that Abu bakr, the prophet's friend should succeed him. however others said that his nephew and son-in-law, Ali should be the next caliph. this led to the division of Islam in to shias and Sunnis. the former supporting Abu bakr and latter Ali.

In he name of Allah the most Gracious the most merciful.
As in other religions Like Hinduism and Christianity who have
sects by the dozens so this disease also spread to the
religion of Islam and we ended up with two sects that are man
made concepts and has no importance in islam.
people who worship the one God , Allah the almighty and
submit to him and follow the last messenger of Allah the
almighty are called Muslims.Allah the all wise commands the
believing Muslims in the holy Quran to hold unto the rope of
Allah and be not divided amoungst themselves. You have to
go to a great detail into the history of the early Muslims to
find why these two sects appeared. But in a nutshell it is as
follows.
Sunnis are those Muslims who are said to follow the Quran
and the Sunnah of the prophet muhammad [Pbuh] which is
the right path.
Shia's are those Muslims who deviated from the straight
path and began following concepts that are against the
teachings of the Quran and the sunnah of the Prophet [pbuh]
As such they have gone outside the pale of islam.
May Allah the almighty guide us all to his deen as Muslims.

All religions have sects. In Christianity the mormons believe in a completely different practice of Christinaity then Catholics. And the Christian sects have had bloody wars too: the Catholics thought of the non Catholics (protestants) as atheists for centuries.
People are people and they'll disagree no matter what religion or political party. It's human nature. The Shiats and the Sunnis have gotten along fine for over a thousand years and many political international experts agree that their differences have been manufactured to "divide and conquer" them.

There are at least four that I know of
- Sunni
- Shi'a
- Sufi
- Wahibi
What the differences are between the beliefs, I don't know.
I think the Sunni / Shi'a divide is something to do with following either Mohammed's uncle or Mohammed's brother in law.

There are not only two sects but numerous sects. This happens in every socalled religion. The basic question is what is Islam, I am sure you are also follower of ISLAM. (religion of survival, existence, peace and submission to almighty GOD) this is what Islam means, not the one generally understood. If any one who does not believe in above may be not follower of ISLAM but
I think every peace loving , surrendering to ALMIGHTY GOD (whatever name u call him) and positive minded person AND compassionate and respectful to all other human beings is MUSLIM ( Follower of Islam) . NOT THOSE WHO CALL THEMSELVES MUSLIM BUT ARE ENEMY OF SPIRIT OF ISLAM

They are born of the desire to gain control of large groups of people .It is like the split in a polical party.like the DMK and ADMK who claim to follow the path of the same mentors through two different ways .

You got it yourself, shia are wrong for separating themselves from other Muslims.
003.103 And hold fast, all together, by the rope which Allah (stretches out for you), and be not divided among yourselves; and remember with gratitude Allah's favour on you; for ye were enemies and He joined your hearts in love, so that by His Grace, ye became brethren; and ye were on the brink of the pit of Fire, and He saved you from it. Thus doth Allah make His Signs clear to you: That ye may be guided.

These sects are due to minor differences of opinion. All such sects fully believe and have unshakable faith upon the same Creator (Allah), His all and last Prophet (PBUH), His all and last Book (Quran) without any slightest difference.

This does say something about the religion.
If Islam and Christianity are two branches of the same God, then what the Christian bible says is interesting.
(John 13:35) By this all will know that YOU are my disciples, if YOU have love among yourselves.”
Islam does not have this.
