Diplomas can be faked. Your best bet is to check with the local medical society, or better yet, the state medical licensing authority.
In the past two decades hospital medical staffs go to great effort to check the credentials of new applicants. This is a mandate of JCAHO, the Joint Commission for the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. If you get affirmation from a respected hospital that Dr. X is on its staff, it's a pretty safe bet that he/she is genuine. A person would have to be quite sophisticated to falsify all his or her credentials.

If you live in the US you may contact the state licensing board and also check if he has any pending malpractice litigation against him.
