Sounds like some error was found on your return, or you owed some debt that was taken out of your refund (e.g. old taxes, overdue child support, defaulted student loans). The IRS should have sent you a letter telling you why it changed. The letter should come within a week or so of your refund check, maybe a little more if you used direct deposit.

You could call the IRS and ask, if it's been longer than that and you didn't get a letter.

The IRS will send you a letter shortly that expains the difference. Refunds often arrive before the letter does, especially if you have your refund sent directly to your bank account.

Yes, you either had a miscalculation somewhere or maybe you owed some taxes that you were unaware of. I had that happen to me once and it turned out that I owed $100.00 in a tax that I was unaware of. Either way they will be sending you a letter.

I would contact your state tax department and they will be able to help you and let you know exactly why, if you don't want to wait for the letter to come.

Your refund beat your letter of explanation; they come out seperately. The letter will explain why and if you disagree you can start the paperwork process to straighten out whatever happened. Remember, in this day and age we are dealing with idiots and computers.
