I am going to be purchasing a small 4 x 4 and horse trailer, what insurance do I need to be covered whilst towing? Is fully comp enough or do I need extra insurance?

I will be paying for both with cash, not on finance.

Some insurers do include cover for trailers as standard in fully comp policies, but you need to check the small print.

The cover may be limited to certain types and may specifically exclude common trailers like horseboxes.

I think the AA is one that excludes larger, more 'commercial' types of trailer from its standard cover.

So fully comp may be enough on its own, but even if trailer cover isn't included as standard, an insurer will probably still cover it for an extra premium.

Not sure what insurance you'd need for any horse you're carrying though!

If you purchase a vehicle and/or trailer with finance you must insure fully comp. In some cases it is a condition of the finance offer.

The insurer will tailor your insurance to give the cover you need. If you are carrying animals it may be that you need additional insurance when doing so.

Speak to an insurance broker. They will be able to put the whole thing together for you. Might be more than one insurer involved

The standard policy will extend to include legal liability for any trailer whilst being towed. You may need a further extension to provide cover whilst unhitched from the insured vehicle though (ie for theft).

Check with your insurer/broker for further advice.

damage caused by the trailer will be insured whilst being towed but this will not cover damage to the trailer itself

the trailor will be covered on a third party only basi while it is being towed ie any damaged caused by the trailor itself to someone elses car or property will be covered by your insurance company, but they will not pay to repair the trailor. nothing in the trailor will be covered either - but legally you can tow the trailor on comprehensive cover.
