When migration started Mexico had not much of an economy, people had to be very educated to get the good jobs and the majority was living in substandard housing, growing vegs and chickens in order to eat.
So they saw that the farmers on this side hired what was called by my Dad 'stoop laborers" in other words you were bending down all the times picking the tomatoes, strawberries whatever crop needed harvesting and there wasn't that many Americans that wanted to do the work.
So to come here and work for minimum farm wage was more than they could ever dream of making in Mexico so they came.
Nowadays I am not sure, Mexico has a better economy and I know they have factories built there to make cars but some families only know farming so they continue to come. Maybe its just habit.. maybe lack of a higher education, maybe just the thought of making money in a short season and going back home again with presents for everyone.
What makes a man want to leave everything behind to cross a border illegally? I don't really know the answer now, it used to make sense but not anymore.

It goes back to the origins of the US.

The USA was populated by immigrants, and still is. Now as back then, people are looking for a better opportunity. Unfortunately, now many are there illegally and not there for a season, which makes it worse.

Immigration is good for corporate America. It suppresses the cost of labor for many hotels, restaurants, and other labor intensive industries.

Because it helps powerful corporations, I think that the government will continue to give lip service to the "problem" while continuing to ignore illegal immigration.

Personally, I believe we should welcome these industrious folks and do everything we can to help them have a comfortable life in America. I'd like to see more done to avoid the frequent abuses of this population.
