First off , I 'm sure that Billie meant well, but DO NOT go to a chiropractor.
That said, I am painfully aware of your situation. For some short term relief, you can alternate ice and heat on your lower back, 15min each with at least an hour in between. Usually the pain is on one side of your spine or the other so place the packs on that side instead of in the center. Over the counter medications are not really gonna solve your problem but Aleve Liquid Gels seem to work the best.
I know that you said that you don't have a GP, but if you have insurance you should really head to the ER because I would almost bet that you have slipped, ruptured or herniated a disc.
The way you described the situation leads me to believe that way. I did mine, pulling a vacuum out of my closet, so it doesn't take much. With the pain you describe, you need X Rays or MRI (alot of ruptures don't show on X Ray), if ruptured discs go undetected they can really cause alot of nerve damage as well. Feel free to e mail me if you have a question, and I'm curious, is the pain going down you right hip or leg?
Good Luck, I know it hurts!!

I have several problems with my spine and was once stuck upstairs for about 5 months, then my doctor prescribed dihydrocodeine painkillers for me and I've, touch wood, not been that bad since. I still have daily pain but the tablets help and because they're strong they allow me to keep mobile, which is what you need. I find lying flat makes it worse and I'm more comfy lying with 3 pillows behind my back and shoulders. It's funny how a simple movement can put your back out isn't it? Not funny haha obviously, but funny weird.
Register with a GP quick sharpish for a prescription strength painkillers then keep as busy as you can without overdoing it.
Edit: With regard to the answer above, I did that one Boxing Day and they couldn't have cared less! They made me jump off a trolley by myself and when my feet went numb they sent me home in an ambulance saying the strongest painkiller they had was paracetamol and that I would probably already have some! So they didn't give me any.

I know this wont actually solve the cause of the problem but may alleviate the pain a little until you can get sorted out. It's a basic yoga pose and is designed specifically to relax the muscles in the lumber area of the back.

Kneel on the floor. Touch your big toes together and sit on your heels, then separate your knees about as wide as your hips.

Exhale and lay your torso down between your thighs. Broaden your sacrum across the back of your pelvis and narrow your hip points toward the navel, so that they nestle down onto the inner thighs. Lengthen your tailbone away from the back of the pelvis while you lift the base of your skull away from the back of your neck.

Lay your hands on the floor alongside your torso, palms up, and release the fronts of your shoulders toward the floor. Feel how the weight of the front shoulders pulls the shoulder blades wide across your back.

You may want to support your head and neck with a pillow or cushion.

I hope this helps a little

I just had this problem last week. Mine was a lumbar sprain. But, you do need to see if it's a slipped disc. If your legs are numb or a pain that shoots down them, go to the ER. If not, avoid sitting as much as possible. I usually lie on the floor and put my legs on the couch. Takes the pressure off the back. When I sleep, I keep a pillow btw the knees to keep pressure off. Try a massager, deep heat, and rest. It will take 1-2 weeks to feel better. I went to the ER with mine and they gave me a pain killer, muscle relaxer, and anti-inflammatory. Take ibuprofen (Advil) every 4-6 hours. Hope you feel better soon!!

Go to a craneal osteopath... you may have to pay, but that's the price of getting your health back. Having a GP would do you little real good as you would need to have a tratment emmediatrely, and any GP would only get you into the referal process, and as an employ of the crumbled health system of Britain, you know this more than anyone.

Nothing can beat chiropractic therapy. They can give you a full examination and find the cause of the back problem and help you with getting pain relief. Since your new to your area I have enclosed a link to a web site where you can find a chiropractor in your area. I know this will help.

Try putting ice in a plastic bag, wrapping it in a dry cloth, and applying for 20 minutes, no more, at a time. Keep cloth dry.
Try Orudis (ketoprofin) otc.

If the pain is really bad why not go too A+E? You could have a slipped disk.
