Your first answerer notwithstanding, the Christian movement spread by word by others who were already converted. God made sure of that. The Apostle Paul was the Apostle to the Gentiles, and I put a lot of credit to him for being the messenger for Christianity. Sure, the other Apostles had some influence, but Paul seems to have been more dedicated to that cause.

And so the word spread throught the religion, later to be 'Cannonized' by Constantine at the council of Nicea.

What followed was the worst time in Christian history, where even those who attested to believing in God's word were persecuted by an 'official church' that mantained that all must come under the umbella of Roman Catholicism.

I would recommend reading Foxe's Book of Martyrs in order to be exposed to those times.
