Genesis 1:6-7 mentions “waters above,” a “canopy” of water that surrounded the earth. Such a “water canopy” would have created a “greenhouse effect” on the entire earth, and would have blocked much of the radiation that now hits the earth. This would have resulted in ideal living conditions on the earth. This seems especially so considering how quickly the lifespans began to shrink after the Flood. Genesis 7:11 likely indicates that, in the Flood, the “water canopy” was poured out on the earth, ending the ideal living conditions. Compare the ages before the Flood (Genesis 5:1-32) with the ages after the Flood (Genesis 11:10-32). Immediately have the Flood, the ages decreased dramatically.
Another factor to consider is that in the first few generations after Creation, the human genetic code had not developed many defects. Adam and Eve were created perfect. They were surely highly resistant to diseases and illnesses. Their descendants would have inherited these advantages, albeit to lesser degrees. Over time, though, as a result of sin, the human genetic code became increasingly corrupted, and human beings became more and more susceptible to death and disease. This would have resulted in a drastically reduced lifespan.

I'm not sure. But considering that Adam and Eve's children all married each other, I imagine they must have had perfect genes back then, with no mutations that caused congenital deformities from inbreeding. Perhaps the genes eroded over time.
Another idea is that everyone who was born after the flood had a much shorter life span (I think). Perhaps the flood changed something in the earth (chemical or electromagnetic) and that also shortened man's lifespan.

There are many possible speculations for this question.
It is known that 1000's of years ago the earths ozone layer was far thicker than it is today. A much thicker ozone means less solar radiation penetrating and causing mutation to our tissues. This extra protective effect could easily prolong lifespan.
The second obvious speculation concerns how time was measured. Our calander (the gregorian calender/julian calender) denotes one solar rotation as a year. However, plenty of other logical ways to define a year are possible.
There are many genetic factors controling aging and lifespan. Any change in lifespan is likely to be as a result of changes to our environment which might cause a change in balance of gene expression to cope with new conditions. Such change in environment might include such things as::
*Gas content in our lower atmosphere
*Diet and amount of food consumed (low calory diets increase lifespan in mammels
*Ozone thickness
* Strenth of solar radiation
Other possibilities
1) Our gene pool (all the genetic diversity in our species) could at some point have been altered or disrupted alot by:
*Another species eg A virus('s)
*By an intersteller event such as a near by gamma ray burst, or a supernova.
2) As our species ages, more genetic damage occurs and is passed down. Eventually, our species may become unstable due to such combined genetic alteration through the generations.
3) The earths magnetosphere may wane with the age of the earth, as the energy of the planet dissapates. As the magnetosphere protects us from solar radiation and charged particles, a drop in strength or coverage in the magnetosphere may cause increase in mutations to all DNA.

The explanation is in science. Prior to the flood the earth was covered in a mist that blocked out most of the sun's harmful radiation; therefore, there was very little disease on the earth. Genetic diseases did not exist at the time. After the flood this protective mist disappeared; thus, the lifespan of humans was greatly reduced. This is generally supported by theologians.

I believe that after those long lives, we began to get more and more diseases. Now we are living in an age where The bacteria has overcome. Using antibacterial soap has increased their strength to do harm. Also feeding animals hormones has decreased our resistance to disease. There was no harmful bacteria back then. Diseases were not as prevalent. Spreading their ancestral lines too thin led to a spread of weaker genetic lines. If you read the Bible you will see God told the Hebrews not to marry into other nations. Well they did. They disobeyed. In Leviticus are many rules that are for cleansing and care of ones body. They disobeyed those as well. Especially homosexuality, dietary laws, and all other means of disobedience. Thus death.at earlier ages.

genesis 6:3 "...his (man's) days will be a hundred and twenty years" Around this time the Nephilim were created or came into the world and the greatest evil came, which initiated the flood, so God not only caused the flood, he decreased man's time on the Earth. Of course there are several theoires on what a Nephilim was. We know for sure they were gigantic beings.

The genealogy is concerned with the ruling clans in the tribes. It is like speaking of the House of Windsor, Tudor, or Lancaster in English history. It just seems very strange because of the different conventions of naming the ruling lines of the nobles. They do seem to get confused quite a bit in the translations about if they are referring to the original person or to the descendants. Sometimes they will refer to a person after they tell you that person was dead a long time before. note also that a lot of these time lines are running at the same time and are reflecting the strength of the royal houses in the structure.

They were closer to perfection...direct descendants of Adam would inherit a near perfect DNA. A little befor the flood, God announced that he would cut man's life span to about a hundred years due to the badness in his heart.

Goes back to the fact God made humans perfect. And it is sin that slowly kills the long life of man until the average age of man is what it is today.

i was learning about that the other day. apparently there was this type of canopy thing around earth which increased some kind of pressure on earth (can't remember.....) and the air was really pure; no pollution
