Religion isn't responsible for either. People are. Some people bring more tolerance to the table and some bring less. Put the blame/credit where it belongs.

Of course less...Look at what religions do and teach...we are the only way to heaven follow our way or be damned..if you don't believe what we believe you are evil or not intelligent misguided..so we have to show you the light MAKE you understand you have to do what we say...there are some religions that don't say this or act this way but those we mostly destroy and killed off by the Christians in the crusades..the druid one with nature ways..all killed by Christians..the Buddhist in Tibet killed by the communist china..the shamanistic ways of the native Americans...killed by Christians..and military America...if we got rid of religion just focused on spirit and love...like Jesus and Buddha and most of the new age ways..there would be no more war no more need for government to protect us..no more laws or controls like cops and military...all we would need is this " LOVE Others as you love yourself" treat others the way you want to be treated...if everyone did this WAR,RELIGION, GOVERNMENT,POLICE,CRIME, and PUNISHMENT would be of no use to us anymore..

If I'm not regulated to three answers : Religion gives me great comfort God was with me in the fox holes of 'Nam through two tours of duty. He was there for me when I was so scared I cried, alone in the heat and rain, waiting to die.
I always kept my promise to live by the Book and adore my God, going to mass at all times, even in sickness. He gives me comfort and I will always remember Him.
I believe he had a reason to keep me alive while others were being taken and wounded although I was wounded too.
I have had 14 grand-kids and five kids, maybe, I tell myself, there's going to be one of them that will bring peace to mankind and stop the wars that are killing our young. Maybe that was my purpose in life.

I have always felt guilt because of the killing I did but, I try not to think about it, I will take the guilt to my grave and I'm sure I will be forgiven.

Tolerence is dependent on the religious person, or group in question. They are the religion.

Religion has brought neither, nor has it started wars. Man will fight over who ate the most onions if there was no religion to fight over.

it would be interesting to find a culture devoid of any belief system and observe their tolerance to something they don't understand or haven't thought of before. i think that a lot of the organised belief systems preach a Join us or be among those shunned, ridiculed, scorned or harmed in some way...

Religion is like communism. It sounds wonderful in theory, but in the hands of corrupt leaders it is a nightmare.
