Inded it is. There are seven grades of heaven. And each is exponentially superior to earth in its riches, and opulence. And one heaven is more attractive than other depending on it's place in the higharchy.
It is not a mindset working, but it is what is written in the scriptures.
The space that we see around, is with air in it. So we understand it. We also understand a vacuumised space, but we again relate it to the airy space, for understanding it.
The space where heavens are, even though made of matter, is not comprehensible by us. But it is not the same space where we live. So our science has access to our space, may be including the milky ways, but the space of heaven/ hell, as also God's abode is not reachable by us, unless with the help of a true saint.
Thanks for reading through this.

In human terminology we say that Heaven is somewhere beyond or above the Earth, in reality though Heaven exists where God dwells so it can be anywhere in the universe or another dimension entirely.
Most people think of Heaven as a boring place of continuous kneeling and praising God but this is a misconception, Heaven is not a passive existence but an active one,God will have surprises in store beyond our wildest dreams, we will have activities that will fully satisfy us and so we will experience incredible joy.
Jesus put like this`No eye has seen no ear has heard, nor has it entered into the heart of man what God has prepared for those who love Him`.

Yes, Heaven is real, and yes God is there, as are the angels. It is out of our reach, for good reason and lies beyond what we know as our universe. Also, "Heaven" can mean many different things. Heaven can mean the atmosphere, it can mean outer space and it can mean actual Heaven. No, we as man will never see Heaven. Heaven is not for us. Where we will reside is here on Earth. As the Lord destroyed the Earth in the flood and recreated it and replenished it, so will He destroy the Earth with fire (the "Hell" the Christians claim the unrighteous will be sent to is really to be left upon the Earth and destroyed with it) and recreate it for the righteous to inhabit and He and His Son, Jesus, will rule the Earth once more.
So, to answer your question, yes Heaven is real. Do I have proof? Of course not. But, as an Atheist, I assume you subscribe to either the theory of evolution or the "big bang" theory, or both, and there is no hardcore, proveable evidence of either, but you go on the faith that scientists know enough that if they believe it to be how things happened, it's how it happened. I believe in the word of my Lord enough that if He says Heaven is real, and He's there, then I believe it. But to each their own, and one day we'll know who was right in the end, whether it be you or me or Darwin, yes? ;)

A number of people have had experiences where they've felt they went to heaven. One recent example is "Flight to Heaven", a book written by a guy named Dale Black. He was a pilot and was involved in a plane crash where he survived, but was near death. He claims to have gone to heaven and come back, and wrote the book about the experience. A more personal example is my mother was in the hospital giving birth to one of my siblings, and after labour she actually "died" for a brief period of time. She flat-lined and they had to bring her back. During that time, she claims that she was in a tunnel of light and a voice talked to her, telling her to go back, that it wasn't her time. Now whether or not these experiences were just the brain trying to make sense of what was going on by creating a dream-like reality based on stories of what happens when you die, who is to say? We do know that near death experiences are not universally the same. People have different experiences based upon their culture and/or religion. Age also plays a factor, with children typically having different experiences than older people. I personally don't believe in an afterlife because I've never seen any proof to suggest that one would exist. That doesn't mean there isn't one though. But considering we've yet to be able to even prove the existence of the soul/spirit, we are still a ways away from being able to answer if heaven (or any kind of afterlife) exists or not. Currently, the evidence points to no.

The physical “heavens” extend through earth’s atmosphere and beyond to the regions of outer space with their stellar bodies, “all the army of the heavens”—sun, moon, stars, and constellations. (Deuteronomy 4:19) The first verse of the Bible describes the creation of such starry heavens prior to the development of earth for human habitation. (Genesis 1:1) Astronomers, despite their modern equipment and advanced mathematical knowledge, are still unable to comprehend these statutes fully. (Job 38:33) Their findings, however, confirm the impossibility of man’s placing a measurement upon such heavens or of counting the stellar bodies. (Jeremiah 31:37; 33:22;) Yet they are numbered and named by God.—Psalm 147:4; Isaiah 40:26.
Solomon, the constructor of the temple at Jerusalem, stated that the “heavens, yes, the heaven of the heavens” cannot contain God. (1Kings 8:27)
God does not reside in the physical heavens, being a Spirit. However, since he is “the High and Lofty One” who resides in “the height” (Isaiah 57:15), the basic sense of that which is “lifted up” or “lofty” expressed in the Hebrew-language word makes it appropriate to describe God’s “lofty abode of holiness and beauty.” (Isa 63:15) As the Maker of the physical heavens Jehovah is also their Owner. (Psalm 115:15, 16) Whatever is his pleasure to do in them, he does, including miraculous acts.—Psalm 135:6.
In many texts, therefore, the “heavens” stand for God himself and his sovereign position. His throne is in the heavens, that is, in the spirit realm over which he also rules. (Psalm 103:19-21) From his supreme or ultimate position, Jehovah, in effect, ‘looks down’ upon the physical heavens and earth (Psalm 14:2)

Heaven is real. However, I'm pretty sure none of us here on yahoo answers have died, gone to heaven, and come back, so no one can really answer your question the details you are looking for.
I think you would enjoy reading books by Lee Stroble and Hank Henegraf. They explain these things better.
Good luck with your quest for knowledge!

Dear Friend you can not understand God with your intellect as the Bible says You cannot fathom or perceive the understanding of God. If you want an answer just ask Jesus he will show you the heaven.
Heaven is a real and wonderful place. Wanna go there just ask Jesus to come into your life.
It is better to believe in God than to go to hell and know that there was God.
God Bless you

Yes, I do have scripture that reveals a 'place'. So I lean on that and personal experience when dealing with the subject.
( You don't forget an experience like that!)
Some say it's in the Pleiades. There is other evidence pointing to that, but I won't get into that now.

The question you should be asking is where is the physical universe located, when God is omnipresent.
edit:
And why is there a physical universe also...when you find out where it is.
