Are you asking us to do your homework? Not all cultures respected elders all the time. When they became a "drag" on the community, they were often times killed. (For instance, the Inuit culture.)

Respect for elders was, is, and will always be best for society. However, this respect is premised on the individual's being of redeeming character. Unfortunately, it would seem, as time has gone forward, more and more elders have become less and less respectable. Also the media has focused on life's negative characters rather than those of a positive nature. Information is so immediately available now, and so rapidly changing today, that elders must necessarily keep up with it in order to achieve the respect they wish to have accorded unto themselves.

My grandparents and parents demanded respect! When I was younger, even if you looked cross-eyed at them after they told you to do something you'd get back-handed or sent to your room with no dinner. I think because both parents are working now and with divorce rates so high that the family unit has really been hurt by it. Kids are freer to roam now, and to do their own thing without too much supervision. Even teachers are afraid of some kids at schools. I think children should respect their elders, unless the elders give them a very good reason for not earning their respect. I never cussed in front of my family elders either. My grandfather said that was the proudest thing about all his grandchildren. We all loved and respected one another.

That is true. In the past, people used to respect elders irrespective of what type of person he is. It has some PROS and CONS to it. Here is how i explain it as i noticed it...

It indeed used to be the way as you said (in the past). But MAN was also considered to he the head of the family and WOMAN always should abide by him. Some people took this as advantage and started troubling women (infact there were lot of rapes and inequality shown towards women). FEMALE were always inferior to MALE. This was a big disadvantage at that time.

But today, where respect has got very little meaning in our everyday life, people who are rich and wealthy are respected by many rather than a person who has nice thoughts. I'm not saying that all people are like that but most of them are..

So, i think, we need to re-think about that and make necessary changes to our lives by respecting women and also respecting and appreciate those who work hard and are honest at the same time.... YIN-YANG.. you know what i mean..

Depends on where you are. In most Asian societies, there is still tremendous respect for the elderly. In many developed nations for example, youth is worshipped. Anything old is considered defunct and not as useful, same goes for the elderly. Probably going to be a global ocurrance as countries become more developed. In Singapore, there is already growing concern over young men and women who do not want to care for their elderly parents.
