My little sister's left side lip ring is infected. She woke up, it was swollen and it turn like hell.
Anyone have any tips on how to get it to heal quicker?
The last time her lip was infected, it was because she needed new rings, after someone on ya suggested it, she went and bought a new pair about 5 months ago and the swelling went down and the infection passed.
Should she get a new pair? Any tips to help keep it painless while waiting for a new pair?
Thanks.

HEY 2legit, CAN YOU READ?? APPARENTLY NOT BECAUSE I NEVER SAID SHE WAS NOT OLD ENOUGH TO GET IT REDONE. I NEVER SAID IT LOOKED BAD EITHER. SHe got it done by a professional, my MOTHER took her to GET SNAKEBITES. And when I said she couldn't get it REPIERCED, it was because she doesn't have time to get it done and even if she did, our parents work all the time and wouldn't have time to take her. IDIOT.Your a disgrace, you can't even read let alone answer properly.

It sounds like she's doing something wrong. Infection is rare with healed piericngs, unless she's done something to break the skin.

Infections involve swelling, pain, green discharge, heat and sometimes itchyness.

Jewlery doesn't cause infections, but poor qualtiy jewelry can cause allergic reactions. Good qualtiy jewlery can be worn indefinatley and doesn't need to be replaced. Make sure that she's got good quality 316L surgical steel or titanium jewelry.

Does she have a cold or is she otherwise sick? That can cause piericngs to flare up and be swollen. Sometimes it will affect all piercings, sometimes only one.

Is it possible that she got it caught on something or 'over used it' (I'm not trying to be crude, or imply anything, but a lot of rubbing can cause irritation, swelling and soreness)

Tell her to go to her piercing studio to have it checked out to be sure it's not an infection. She shouldn't need a parent to do this since they're not piercing anything, just giving advice. She can chew on ice chips to help with swelling and pain. If there is green discharge, she should see a doctor.

WHY DO PEOPLE THINK THAT WHEN YOU SAY "LITTLE SIS" IT MEANS VERY YOUNG LIKE 8 or 9? YOUR LITTLE SIS CAN BE 20 WHILE YOUR 25, OR 17 AND SHE CAN BE A YEAR YOUNGER> SOME IDIOTS>
I am laughing at some of these answers.. I don't think you even have authority to answer this question unless you have actually ever HAD AN INFECTED LIP RING. And know the PAIN you have to go through. Its not like a little cut or cat bite.. And please, ifnore that idiot that says she needs to take 3 antibiotics, don't do that. A majority of these people answering are taking wild guesses as to what to do.
I had mine infected, I left the ring in and as soon as it healed enough to remove it and safely put a new one it, I put in a brand new one. I used to be able to wear rings for about 5 months until I needed a new pair. Just keep rinsing with mouthwash and keep her mouth clean. I often got mine infected when I still had mine in, I took mine out and got a septum instead.
What I would do was eat messy food and at the same time play with my ring, twisting it around and sometimes an ity bity drop would manage to find itself into my piercing and my lip would get infected. I also noticed that when I was sick, my facial piercings swell. And DO NOT RINSE WITH SALT, that is the worst thing you could do to your wound! Okay so I would say for about 1 month, no kissing, eating very messy food without a fork, when she drinks, drink with a straw, and when she eats always TRY to use a spoon or fork even if its something like chips, it sounds stupid but it keeps it clean. You can also buy this sea water stuff from piercers, helps it heal nicely. And only wear studs when you have to, like at a party or school, as soon as you get home change back into rings. If you are wearing studs, the back of it tends to pretrude into your lip and it hurts to get it out and pt in a ring.
Just treat it like its newly pierced. And as soon as it heals enough to easily remove and insert new jewelry, painlessly,
get new jewelry from a PROFESSIONAL piercer, not somewhere like hottopic, they do not use as good metals.

this is how i have gotten rid of piercing infections Take a q-tip with isopropyl alcohol and thoroughly clean as much of it as you can, as often as you can. Three times a day should be sufficient but do it as often as possible. it may burn but it will sterilize the area. within a week or so it should clear up. also swish mouthwash a couple times a day, and if the piercing is producing pus clean it off with a tissue as much as you can. do not remove the ring until the infection is healed or the hole will close up almost immediately

it needs to heal before you can leave them out - you can't take jewellery out of infected piercings and leave them, as this can cause all sorts of problems (it traps the infection between the healing skin, which is a bad idea)

so find jewellery she isn't allergic to - stainless steel? try to avoid gold etc, and contact the piercer to see if he's got any ideas. and basically keep it clean with gentle solutions (anything strong will only aggravate the problem)

she must take oral antibiotics a 3 week course and when it gets better she must not stop until they r all gone. she can take a shorter course. but that is the best way she must also treat it with antiseptic liquids like TCP use listerine for the inside. that shud help.

she must also get a surgical ring. those r the ones u wear thru infections.

if it keeps getting infected she needs to take it out for good.my cousin had the same problem w/ her navel piercing. she kept changing the ring but it wouldnt help. it would go away for awhile but come back. sometimes certain part of your body are sensitive & dont take to piercings to well

Try rinsing with salt water & contact the person who pierced it. They will have more knowledge on how to handle this problem.

Listen to what your saying........It's infected, swollen and look really bad AND YOU DON'T WANT HER TO TAKE IT OUT BECAUSE SHE'S NOT OLD ENOUGH TO GET IT DONE AGAIN?? What kind of sister are you? Your putting a fashion statement before your sisters health, you should be ashamed of yourself. Tell her to take it out NOW before it gets even worse. She's 15 she only has to wait a year and she can get it done properly.

Totally disgraceful!!!!! Make her take it out, clean it up with TCP or whatever you have and let the lip heal. It will just keep getting worse until she takes it out and lets it heal.

she may be allergic to the metal. have her remove the ring and keep the area clean with soap and water. she may have to find another fad.
