We don't even know who the authors are. Most of the new testiment was written by ghost writers. The first generation of Christians didn't see any need for a permanent written record of the sayings and stories of Jesus. Jesus' return and the restoration of the Kingdom of God on earth were imminent--why bother preserving stories if the world was about to end? Stories were simply passed along orally, primarily as a means of preaching and convincing outsiders. But as the first generation began to die off and hopes for the Second Coming dimmed, there was a need to preserve Jesus' words and deeds for posterity

The Church recorded the history of the development of
the canon of the Bible under the authority of the Holy Spirit.

A primary criterion of canonicity is inspiration, the divine
influence on human writers such that God is said to be the
author. And God’s revelation, faithfully written, aptly
expressed, was expressed with infallible truth.

We discover the meaning of the Bible—hermeneutics—by the literal sense of the words first, then the fuller sense, and then the typical sense of the words of Sacred Scripture.

Cheers :-)

The bible that we know today was created by the Council of Nicaea in 325 CE and backed by the Roman Empire. All of the texts not wanted were declared heretical(not orthodox or the "right" way) These included the gospel of Thomas,Revelation of St Peter,The gospel of Mary,The Coptic story of the life of Christ in Egypt and the writings of the Gnostic's among others. So I don't think the bible is the word of god unless all the writings are accepted and even so there is doubt.I really think these issues about the bible are moot.

1) Well in a way the Bible is not the Word of God, but what we call "The Word of God" is the message transmitted through the Bible. For instance a minister may be inspired by the Holy Spirit, but his sermon in itself is not "the Word of God" but the Word of God may be 'conveyed through it'. The same goes with the Bible. The only way to tell if it is the Word of God and inspired by the Holy Spirit is if you have the Holy Spirit within you.

2) Do their names really matter? Anyway we can tell by their writing style if they appear like the people they are credited to be. For instance the author of Matthew's gospel obviously had an education, though certainly not as much as Paul. Luke's gospel and Acts is evidently from the same author and he was also well educated it appears. John, Peter, James and Jude all, frankly, wrote like fishermen, and they used very elementary school Greek. And Paul was extremely well-versed.

3) Many historical documents are not written in autobiographical form, but historical. Also consider many of the authors conducted business (tax-collector, fishermen, physician). These people by their custom did not always write in first person, but as their career required them to keep records they subsequently wrote their gospels and epistles as historical records, not "journal entries".

4) Yes they would have written it! Consider the Hebrew culture, the Jews were always waiting for the Messiah, and even though they thought he would come soon they wrote about him nonetheless. FUTHERMORE many of the gospels were more like letters rather than historical essays, because Luke wrote his gospel and Acts to Theophillus, Paul wrote his letters to the churches, and Peter, John, Jude, James did so too. So they had full reason to write what they did when they did.

We don't! In fact, it's so incredibly unlikely that it's a pretty safe assumption that it isn't.

Yet so many people will assert its truth...a pretense of certainty one can only laugh at, really. If someone claims any real certainty about the existence of God or the Bible or some other book being "God-inspired" or the "word of God," that is a quick and easy way to tell they're full of ****. Either that, or totally brainwashed/indoctrinated.

It's the actual word of bronze age middle eastern goat herders, inventing stories at night around the camp fire ,playing to scare each other. That's why it's full of violence, machismo and fantasies.

Well, maybe because the bible is not the word of a deity.

It was written by ancient men, which explains the lack of science, gender equality, religious freedom, and inquisitive thinking.

If only more people could acknowledge the real origins of the bible, instead of this hokey nonsense about 'infallible' truth.

Because the authority of the Catholic Church (given by Christ himself) told us so at regional councils of Trent, Carthrage and Hippo in the late 4th century.

Not even the xtians believe that. They believe that the bible is the interpretation of the word of god as told through man. And we know how susceptible errors are when man is telling stories now don't we.
