Self-respect is to recognise the fact that, the existence of
the self has a meaning as well as sacred; in other words,
one who respects the self will not commit acts that can be
harmful to the mind and/or body as well as soul.

Ego basically is a mere desire to be in the "right". Ego can
be very harmful and, is the opposite of self-respect: Ego
elevates one's own desires to be "right" by denying others
whilst self-respect is elevating the self by confirming the same
divine existences in others.

Self respect and ego are two completely different things and no they are not in any way related to the other.
Self respect is not arrogant or self serving. It is a set of rules and boundaries one sets for their self so they don't allow others to walk on them. People with strong self respect aren't abused nor do they abuse others because if they respect themselves they also respect others.
Ego is self serving and self centered. Ego doesn't comprehend humility because it is arrogant. Ego demands respect from others while it gives none because ego is elitist.

Freud defines ego as the "real" self, as distinct from other elements of the unconscious such as the id (passions) or the superego (an idealized morality). Instead of ego I would use the word narcissism, which is "excessive love of oneself". So what is healthy self respect and what is narcissism? It is clear that respecting oneself above all others all the time would be equivalent to narcissism. In the context of ones relationship to God, it would be foolish to respect oneself above Him as he is all-powerful and we are finite creatures. It is natural for us to respect ourselves above children, however even children can outshine us in purity and innocence. We tend to respect ourselves more if we receive an award or honour, but this respect should be tempered with a realization of our faults and mistakes. Overall it is difficult to justify entertaining high levels of self respect for two reasons
(a) in general there are always going to be people better than us in any given area of human life, and
(b) it is too easy for self respect to drift into narcissism, which is unpleasant for everyone

I would advise cultivating humility rather than self respect...it is more difficult but it is also more rewarding and less troublesome.

Self respect is the respect that you feel for yourself. Ego is the respect that you expect from others.

This is just an opinion ....
and it does depend upon your definition of 'ego' ....
however I think it is necessary to have ego to begin with because it means "I am ...." ... in some sense ....and that is to recognize ones's existence ....

and having done that, one may work on self-respect, if it is not already in-born ....

both hold you together, but that is just my opinion

Peace & Love

You can have respect towards you if you are deserving for that but you will be having ego without that.Self respect can be achieved with great efforts in life but you can have your ego without any effort being taken. In no way these two are corelated.

A self-opinionated person is a typical example of an egoist who has strong feelings about his own opinions. He expects everyone to agree with him. This reflects a negative aspect of his personality.

A self-respecting person does not have an inflated ego. He is confident about his character, beliefs and abilities and does not take offence if people do not agree with his opinions. He is quite a positive person.

Respect always comes from outside. The term "self respect" should be used for a group of people like a community, a society, a Nation........

If an individual expresses respect with himself he is "self-conscious" ................he is "egomaniac".

If he claims that he should be respected ,,,,,,,,,,,it is called "id"

when he is alone (eg.meditation, prayer etc.); if he feels his existence in divine state of mind.........it is called "super ego".
