There is no official rules for tipping baristas - I think you can do it or not.

However, remember most of these people are working for close to minimum wage - and they need that quarter worse than you do.

So go ahead - be kind, tip a quarter or fifty cents. Chances are if you are drinking hot choco at a coffeehouse (and not thinking about how much it costs) you certainly can afford to tip a quarter or fifty cents. They will appreciate it.

Hmm...the only time I ever tipped at a coffee shop was in Japan. It was raining hard outside and I came in soaking wet. It was freezing! I mostly came in to avoid the downpour, but while I waited in the line one of the baristas brought me a complimentary cup of plain hot coffee. It was beyond typical customer service so I felt it deserved a tip. Tips are a good idea to show gratitude for someone who goes out of their way to help.

Not only is it expected, but I think it is appropriate as well. The barista is custom making the drink for you, so it would be on par with tipping a bartender. (And you should always be good to your bartender!)

Ditto the person who pointed out that often these folks don't make a high hourly wage and it's expected that part (or most) of their compensation will come from tips.

I usually leave a dollar tip in a coffee place (for one beverage).

Nope, cause they get paid money to do that, i think a tip jar is for outstanding service. I dont tip at a coffee house, but at a bar i do cause your survice will come alot faster if your sitting at a table, waiting.

Yes. The old tip was 15% of cost. Now it's 20%.

No, I do not think this practice is appropriate unless they actually bring it to your table. I am so tired of seeing these tip jars on the counter. They are put there to shame you into giving them a tip and if you don't tip they give you a dirty look. It is their job to make you a cup of coffee. They are, after all, being paid a salary for this. They are not waiting on you like a waitress in a restaurant, who does deserve a tip.

If there is a tip jar and the drink is good, then I'd put whatever coins she/he gave me, maybe a dollar bill IF it is really good tasting and the employee was good.

Who the hell orders hot chocolate these days? The bartender is lucky to get a tip out of me if he can fix my double martini on the rocks just right!

Maybe if they make really good hot chocolate and if they are friendly to you.
