Ok, I am going to give it too you straight.
If it is a romantic dinner you (and she) will probably want to have sex afterwards. To make it more comfortable for both of you:
1. Remember that high carbs and wine can make your lady sleepy. So forget the Italian food.
2. The last thing your wife will want to do after a big meal is take her clothes off and hop into bed.
3. Don't serve anything that could potentially cause gas.

So, with that in mind, keep it light and healthy.
Think broiled fish with lime juice, ginger and cilantro.
Brown rice
Green garden salad
Sauteed green beans or asparagus
guacamole
And a nice Chardonnay
If you want to do a dessert, bake some pears with some cinnamon and brown sugar. Top with a scoop of ice cream.

What does she like to eat? What does she cook for you when she makes a romantic dinner? Riff off of that.

*I* would like:

Small, tender steak with garlic butter (just three or four ounces is enough).

A cute salad with pecans or almonds and a sharp cheese like feta, with a simple viniagrette.

Steamed broccoli with steamed shrimp.

Chocolate brownies with really good ice cream for dessert.

It's the atmosphere that really makes it, though -- candles or other low lighting, flowers, nice music suitable for dancing or snogging after dinner. (-: I'd find chili dogs and root beer extremely romantic under these circumstances.

(-: You are such a sweet husband for thinking of this! I wish you the very best of luck from the God of Cooking!

Your best bet is just make her favorite dish. Add some mood lighting, or candles, her favorite soft music. Get a nice table cloth and sprinkle rose pedals on it. The feed it too her. If that is not romantic, then I don't know what is.

PAYDAY - I had to laugh at that.

Darn, you guys and gals are right. Don't forget the wine. If you are not a drinker. Ice tea, but freeze some cherries in the ice cubes and use those. She'll admire the extra care you went to.

Go for something simple that you don't have to spend the whole time tending to it. (or feeling stressed)
Consider a simple tandoori chicken with rice and a garden salad or
frenched lamb cutlets glazed with a sweet chutney and done under a griller (again with steamed rice and a garden salad).
I agree with above as well how nice the table looks - flowers and candles etc really makes for a memorable evening.

Go Italian. Make a savory meat sauce, to put over thin spaghetti, add fresh Italian Bread & (Real) Butter... -a bottle of wine- and Thou (And if SHE doesn't like that- you can invite ME over & I WILL appreciate it! :) ). Good luck!

Macaroni and Cheese from the box. If you want to really make it special, cut up a hot dog or a slice of Bologna.
