Christ the Wisdom and Power of God
18For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 19For it is written:
"I will destroy the wisdom of the wise;
the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate."[a]

20Where is the wise man? Where is the scholar? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? 21For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe. 22Jews demand miraculous signs and Greeks look for wisdom, 23but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, 24but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25For the foolishness of God is wiser than man's wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than man's strength.

That's a prime example of the sort of gibberish that led me on the road to atheism

2007-05-03 18:42:42 · answer #1 · answered by Anonymous · 1 2

I am not an atheist ,,,, All I'm thinking is that you are wasting your time trying to talk to anyone that is ,,,,

You are trying to back up and prove what you say with scripture and you are missing your mark completely no matter how right you are ,,,, To a believer scripture is proof positive and does make sense ,,,,

The atheist doesn't believe in God and it only follows that he doesn't' believe the writings and scriptures in the Bible ,,,,

I read your entire post ,,,, It all makes sense to me ,,,, Maybe because of my knowledge and wisdom ,,,, I'm sure you put allot of effort into it ,,,, Which is commendable

But for two people or factions to have a debate they both have to believe in what the debate is about ,,,, To the atheist there is no argument or debate because he doesn't believe in what you offer as proof in the first place ,,,, So the point is moot before you even start and a waste of your time and effort ,,,, There's nothing in the Bible you can offer them that they will credit ,,,, If there was then the debate would be on ,,,,

They are like little children that have to find out things the hard way ,,,, And of course we know they will find out ,,,, I would sincerely hate to be in their shoes come judgment day ,,,,

You should bend your efforts and counsel toward those who do believe but are confused ,,,, They need your help more ,,,, An atheist isn't confused at all so he doesn't need any help ,,,, Just ask one and he will tell you so ,,,,

I could never argue down any of those that don't believe ,,,, I just know and trust what I feel ,,,, This is my knowledge my strength my wisdom my truth and my peace of mind ,,,,

As for me I don't worry about atheists ,,,, I have enough troubles of my own to keep me occupied ,,,, They will learn after it's too late and all the ranting and raving they do now won't even amount to a hill of dried beans ,,,,

For me I know that if I'm bleeding from a bullet or knife wound then I'm sure that I've been shot or cut ,,,, For me and what I believe it's that real ,,,, It can't be argued and there's no question or debate ,,,,

There is no profit for people of either faction to look down their nose and ridicule anyone on the opposite side ,,,,But you'll notice that the atheists do this quite a bit ,,,, Proof of that comes from almost all the answers to this question ,,,, I just wonder sometimes what they think they have to prove and just who do they think they have to convince,,,, Why does what I believe bother them so much ,,,, I do know within myself that there are things coming that they won't believe ,,,, We'll see how many atheists are left after that happens ,,,, Ever hear of the expression " I've seen the light" ? ,,,,

In the end all of us believers and atheists alike including those that have responded negatively to your post will know the truth and believe it ,,,, It will be something tangible and something that can be touched ,,,, It will be that bullet or knife wound ,,,, We will all go our seperate was from there ,,,,

Yoda said this ,,,,

Paul's message was a challenge to people who assumed they had all the answers. (This could apply to some Christians as well.) Note what is being preached: "Christ crucified," a hero who dies, executed as a criminal. That does not sound like an effective philosophy, given the way the world seems to work. The "stumbling block to Jews" was Jesus' lack of messianic credentials. He just didn't fit the profile of expectations for a strong leader.

In contrast, the Greeks took pride in their philosophical traditions, the first attempts to "figure out" the world through reason, rather than relying on old myths. For them, the world's imperfections point to the abstract ideals of which they fall short. Human aspiration is to conform ever more closely to these ideals. For them, the idea of a god would be a perfect being. But Jesus's self-sacrifice and ignominious death contradicted his reputed divinity, at least the way Paul interpreted Greek wisdom. Ironically, there was also a Jewish "wisdom" tradition, as exemplified in the Books of Proverbs and Ecclesiastes, but Paul was trying to make distinctions in order to separate Christianity from ALL conventional "wisdoms", however they are derived.

Seriously though, Christian or not, people can understand that good will, service and self-denial can help transcend the problems of "conventional wisdom". Confuscius, Lao Tzu and Gautama Buddha figured that out as well. Sincere love of others is a risk to ones own security and survival, but the benefits of its example help everyone. That is the strength in the apparent weakness of exposing one's vulnerability to others for their sake. Paul prefers to call them "man's wisdom" and "God's weakness", but we can recognize them without the modifiers. Both are quite human ideas. It all depends on where you draw the line of "wisdom". Is it wise to only look out for your immediate interests, or is it wiser to look out for everyone's interest?

This deeper, "divine" wisdom is simply the Golden Rule writ large. It points to the fault of the selfish, conventional wisdom, which ends up seeking the lowest common denominator of human behavior. Paul's core message is valid. If only he hadn't put it in such adversarial terms!

So, are you (or the Bible) implying that intelligence gets in the way of salvation??? That the true way to Heaven is by being stupid???

Yes, it's true!!! You have to be ignorant and gullible to be saved, or to believe that some clergyman can call up God on a magical hotline to heaven. When the Mighty Oz commands you to ignore the clergyman hiding behind the curtain, you're supposed to blindly obey him--thinking for yourself is a sin!!!

Athiests don't care or respond spiritually to the Bible. So why give them a Bible verse?

PS. The "wisdom of the wise" means those wise in their own view about God and Jesus Christ, as opposed to that taught by the Apostles.

Proverbs 3:5 is a call for the faithful to deny knowledge in favor of faith. It, like your quote, is nothing more than an attempt to control the 'flock'. The more one knows, the less one can believe without proof. Knowledge has been considered evil throughout the bible. It is, after all, what caused the fall of man, according to your myth.

Where was the wise man, scholar, historian, or philosopher during Christ's time. No one...not one single person...EVER wrote of Christ, during Christ's lifetime. Without evidence contemporary to the event, you're left with hearsay...which is not evidence.

I'm not an Athiest, but I don't think that forcing issues like this does anything but tick people off. Jesus tells Christians to be the salt and light of the world, and just quoting off scripture is not a good way to fulfill that.

Rule number one of writing a successful religious text -- make sure that the followers know that anyone who disagrees with what it says is obviously "foolish". Unfortunately, bible verses are meaningless to non-believers, so we don't take those words very seriously.

Just 'cause the Bible says it doesn't mean it's true (see: Bible verse that says insects have four legs).

No response is needed. It's just a book. Just because it's your holy book or anyone else's holy book doesn't automatically give it authority on a subject, much less the subject those verses you quoted were talking about.
