rule no. 1- don't try to cross the streets unless its at a crosswalk in a large group.
2.Never insult, embarrass, shame, yell at or otherwise demean a person. Since all these actions would risk putting a Chinese in a situation that he might lose face(status or self respect). Neither try to prove someone wrong nor shout at him in public.
3.Neither show their emotions and feelings in public. They rarely greet people with a handshake, though it is very popular among foreigners, say nothing of embracing or kissing when greeting or saying good-bye. Consequently, it is better not to behave too carefree in public, even though you are well-intentioned. Do not particularly push yourself forward, or else you are unwelcome.
4.Of course, as a kind of universal language that needs no translation, a smile or a wave will also elicit a friendly response. On some occasions, shaking hands is a good means to greet Chinese people. However, when shaking hands with a Chinese woman, do not hold it too tightly - a light shake of the fingers will do the job.In China, embrace is not a usual way to greet each other, except between family members and very good friends. Kissing, whether on the cheeks or on hands, is unacceptable to the Chinese.

Thats the basics really...not much more i can help you....

Hmmmm quite a question. I will be going to Beijing for 5 weeks this summer as I am doing a degree in Chinese. My teachers are from Beijing and a few rules I will use are:
Never ever be publicly drunk, I'm sure it's acceptable when clubbing but nowhere else, the Chinese hate it, especially because Beijingers tend to think they are better than everyone else because of all the countyside 'peasants' coming into the city.
Chopsticks: Never point with them, put them in your hair, take from the main plate in the centre of the table with your own, or stick them facing up in your rice. It's very disrespectful. Yes, face is a very important thing, so never argue with anyone. Don't mention politics because they think we hate them and Mao and they don't really understand that we're just curious. Please please enjoy Beijing and the fact that you will be very rich because of the marvellous exchange rates around! Maybe see you there!

Basically anything that you don't do in New York, you don't do in Beijing.

-See some suspicious looking people in the alleyways? Stay away from them

Things like that.
As for specific Beijing specialties....
-Be preapared for some EXTREMELY hectic traffic. The diver's skills in Beijing are AMAZING; they can naviage really well in any space, situation. BUT, there's so many of them, that watching the traffic is like watching a syncoronised car performance...thingy.
-But don't worry about getting lost. There are tons of taxies everywhere, and most of them can speak English, if not very well.
-BUT, beware of some taxies: ONLY take the ones that clearly has a "taxi" sign on top. Some of the so-called "taxies" don't look like a taxi, but the inside of it sorta does. For THOSE cars, they normally charge you more than a normal taxi would, and sometimes, if they charge you a lot and you don't pay them, they won't let you out. Those cars are usually black colored.

Other than the taxies and traffic, there really isn't that much to worry about. Remember: Beijing gets TONS of tourists, so they're used to confused caucasians. If you're going to ask someone for help.....ask someone who looks like a nice guy/gal.

Use common sense. Observe what others do but don't repeat exactly. If you plan to live there for work or study, then you should be able to get some tips from your co-workers or classmates or other peers.

Laws are related to business and other related activities - so you should consult with your attorney.

Rules I suppose you mean customs and etiquettes, here is a link with some basic tips:

There's a book titled, "Culture Shock Beijing" that you may want to search on the internet (sorry, I don't remember the name of the author) that details some of our cultural differences and alerts you to the etiquette of the Chinese. Good luck.

Chinese people are very kind to foreigners, if you encounter something that is unfamiliar, smiling to the people around you will be a good method to over it. Don't worry, just do as in your own country, don't offend the law, you will have a good time.

usa has no rules against offending non secular sensibilities, and it is between the main non secular countries in the worldwide. I totally help the two freedom of religion and freedom of speech. As a pagan, I positioned up continuously with human beings treating our Gods and Goddesses with disrespect. there is no reason the Muslims and Christians and Jews shouldn't would desire to place up with human beings disrespecting their gods, too. however the concern in society isn't faith in step with se. see you later as there is wholesome non secular selection with thousands of distinctive religions and thousands of distinctive Gods, then it is not a situation. because of the fact no single faith is vast sufficient to seize power. What makes faith a situation is principally monotheism -- because of the fact the fake theory of "one genuine god" effects interior the fake theory of "in basic terms one suited faith" and then to tries to transform everybody else to your faith, even on the factor of a sword or a gun. Pagan religions with many Gods and Goddesses are inherently tolerant of selection, so as that they do no longer generally attempt to push their faith on everybody, which contain atheists. there is no genuine non secular freedom with out non secular selection. there is no genuine selection with out which contain all the PAGAN religions. genuine non secular selection ability: MANY GODS. _________________________ upload / To the persons who seem to think of the completed western worldwide is like usa: No, that's no longer the case in any respect. Many different countries -- even the "civilized" western international places -- don't have as plenty comprehend for freedom as we do right here in usa. So, certainly, there ARE rules against offending a number of religions, in Europe and probable in Canada too. (i don't be conscious of approximately Australia or New Zealand.) as an occasion, Brigit Bardot replaced into presently fined a brilliant quantity of money in France for criticizing some Islamic practices which would be cruel to animals. So it is not basically gratuitous insults those countries are forbidding: on occasion you're no longer even allowed to particular life like grievance of unethical non secular practices. in case you reside in usa, the place we quite do savour the two freedom of speech and freedom of religion -- super! you may evaluate how fortunate you're to have been born in usa. (Or to have immigrated right here.) .

This is like saying: I am moving to America...what are the rules! It's too broad of a question. You need to be more specific.
