I think dogs are happy just being with their people and will go wherever their people go.

We do both every day.
We have a certain trail we take every morning. My dogs are now 3 and 5 and have not tired of it yet. There's always new doggie scents and plenty of ground squirrels to chase. They get upset if they miss a day at the park. There's always the thought they may get lucky and get to chase a deer.
Then they go about everywhere we do the rest of the day so there's many opportunities for them to get a quick romp in a different place after they've been in the car awhile.
If they've been home all day then they get to go to another park in the evening where they can get in another off-leash romp or I take them for a walk around the neighborhood.
They're always ready for an adventure. They've pooped in 16 states now.
They've gone in the Badlands and the Black Hills of S.Dakota and in the Rocky Mountains,Smokey Mountains and Appalachian Mountains. They've gone in the desert and in cornfields,by many shopping malls across the country and on the beach.
They've seen wild bears and mountain lions and skunks as well as coyote and raccoons. They've been nose to nose with wild mules face to face with tame buffalo as well as llamas and alpacas, reindeer, mountain goats, wild rams, moose, horses, cows and evan a camel and alot of other animals I don't recall off-hand.They've swam in many rivers and run in canyons and on trails in state parks in all 16 states.
For all their adventures you'd think they'd be happy just to be home when we get here but if they hear the words "Puppy park" they're jumping around and whining and barking anxiously to get there asap!
Dogs are creatures of habit. They're always ready for an adventure but they never seem to get bored with the everyday routine.

I think they like variation. I try to take my dogs to a different park from the last time, which can be hard but I think it keeps them interested and excited to go for a walk. Some days I throw the ball for them at a baseball field, some times I take them to the forest to hike, and other days I take them to the dog park to socialize. Though it's not necessary to do something different every time, I think they prefer to have a variation of locations to get excersize.

Dogs get to know the area by smell,
My brother dog could smell the way to the house from the old unit. On the beach the dogs like the seagulls to chase.
As long as they can smell something interesting to them like another dog I don't think they mine.

Dogs, like humans, are highly social animals and this similarity in their overall behavioral pattern accounts for their trainability, playfulness, and ability to fit into human households and social situations. This similarity has earned dogs a unique position in the realm of interspecies relationships.
Pet dogs stay in the house of masters. Real dog lovers never chain them. They stay at master's home as a family member. But generally they select one of two particular places in the home for relaxation.
Street dogs make their own domain. They stay there in group. They may be considered as socially pet animals. They search and get foods and shelters within their own domain. But when, for want of food and shelter, they are forced to cross their domain to shift to another, the existing group of dogs in that domain never recept him/her. Fight starts at first sight. Either that dog runs away or if he/she is a mighty one can win a place in the new domain and becomes element of that area.

I think they like the same walk most of the time, but every so often like to take a walk to see something new.

both. going through the same path everyday would suffice, but if you go to a new place every once in a while, they'd like it. it will give them a chance to explore new places.
