Up to 1000 mg per dose is considered healthy.... its possible to take more then that but unless instructed by a doctor, don't.

The most important thing is that you don't go over 4 grams (4000 mg) a day. So, an appropriate dose would be 1000mg every 6 hours. Of course, if a lower dose works, then there is no need to reach the max daily dose.
Just a word of caution: acetaminophen is found in a bunch of OTC meds. Many people make the mistake of taking Tylenol for the pain and then a cold med (which contains Tylenol) for their cold symptoms. Watch out for that b/c that could put you into a toxic range!

I believe the definitive answer for this was given by Dr. Cox on Scrubs:
Dr. Cox: It's Regular-Strength Tylenol. Here's what you do. Get her to open her mouth, take and handful, and throw it at her. Whatever sticks, that's the correct dosage.
