It's pretty much pure luck. Higher denomination machines generally have a higher percentage payout, and some people think that the noisier machines and the ones placed in the most visible positions are set to pay out more.

The most important thing is quit when you're ahead, and don't put too much money into slot machines. After all, all those fabulous ultraluxury hotel casino resorts on the Las Vegas strip were built mainly on slot machine profits.

True, luck play a major roll. But, some slots are lose and some are tight. I walk around and watch for a while and get some insight as to what going on, in time you get a feel. But, if you do win............you WON!!!!! You Finished!!!!!! Or, you can just lose it all back, including your start money. (I talking a Big Win, not a Dollar or Two, but, like a $200 payout for a Quarter or two).
Now, another thing, get up early and see what going on. Many Casinos move the machines around. The same lose slot is there, but, not always where it was last night!!!!

Here's a little trick:
The different bets are on different computers. For example if you hit the jackpot playing with one credit you may win $200, but if you had played 3 credits the jackpot is a progressive that is say, $10,000. If you hit with one credit, you wouldn't have necessarily have won if you had bet 3. In fact, you are more likely to hit for something on 1 credit. To increase your overall odds of winning, alternate playing 1 credit, then 2, then 3 and so forth and so on. That's what my dad told me and he is so right! I win more times than not.

Oh and John is right, quit while you're ahead. Set a goal before you go. For example: If I win over $300, I'm just going to leave.
