Yes they can, if someone has written down your CC
number they can just go to another store and tell
them that they forgot the card but they do have the
number, the other store is supposed to get an
identification card before doing this.
I would file a fraudulent use claim with the credit card,
they can charge the other store back all of the money
and clear those balances and they can get the signed
receipt (or digital signature) and then prove that it is
not your signature.
Look at the back of your card and call them now,
might also be a good idea to go to https://www.annualcreditreport.com/cra/index.jsp
and get a copy of your credit report (I is free from
all 3 sites once per year) and make sure that you
agree with all of the charges.
Several banks (Chase, Citibank etc..) have lost
personal credit card information but they would have
contacted you.
Be safe, get a credit report and call your CC company
Gatsby has gone a little nuts on you, if there is one
fraudulent charge there may be others, CHECK your
credit, using the link I provided, it is FREE unless you
have already checked all 3 of the reporting institutions
this year.

Classic case of fraud. They dont need your credit card. When you go places and use your credit card like restaurants...the guy takes your card and you dont see it for a few minutes till he is back.
Once he has the numbers...he can go to places like shops that know him and work with him and have them charge the card in their shops.
You need to go have a police report filed immediatly. Or else you will be held responsible for bills they created and no bill collector will even hear about it unless you have a credit report cause so many people charge up the cards and lie about it later.
Plus stop your credit card NOW. Report it to the fraud department of your credit card company. They will ask you some questions than send you a fraud affidavit to fill out and return.
Good Luck

It is possible to manually put a credit card through, but whoever has done it has to have obtained your details first - unfortunately thieves are becoming more and more skilled at obtaining this kind of information. Think back if you have given your details on the internet or over the phone to purchase anything.......
Contact your credit card company to dispute the purchases, I'd say the safest thing to do is cancel the card, I know it's a pain, but better to be safe than sorry!

Sure, it happens all the time. Like when you rent a car or call to have food delivered and pay with a credit card.
The other answers were OK, but off the mark or bringing in non related issues.
Do not call anyone. Look at the back of your statement. Follow the instructions to dispute a charge. You have to send a dispute in WRITING! Type out a short note, dear company I am disputing the charges.....date, amount, description, transaction code or ID. I did not make these charges and have no knowledge of why they were placed on my account. Please remove these immediately and send me a letter to confirm this has occurred. Call after 5 days to confirm receipt of the letter, if not resend the letter certified mail. DO NOT try to figure out what happened. Say the same thing, I did not make the charges, remove the charges. Good luck.

Yes, some people know how they are fraud. Need to contact your bank asap and have your card stopped.
You need to also make a claim so you get your money back. This takes time to investigate but you more than likely will get your money back
Call the bank now so no other transactions take place.

It is possible to punch in the numbers to the machine. This is a failsafe in case the magnetic strip goes bad.
Most stores will not allow this without a card.
But, people can make fake cards. Or someone who works at the store could be typing in your numbers.

It is possible, but most store do not allow you to punch in numbers. They will not believe you are the owner of that credit card!
