My friend owns a 3 yr old HP, the system went down and is not responding to recovery disks. She is wondering if buying and installing Windows XP will be enough, or if she needs to buy device drivers ( do they come included in Windows XP?). Please give advice!

The message that comes up when I turn it on is - NTLDR is missing
I have tried to do system restores and now it is stuck on trying to restore with the recovery discs.
The only thing we have added to it was a video card but it has been in it for months.

Unless your recovery disk is damaged (scratched), you seem to have another problem. Do you see the following:

1) Do you see anything on the screen at power up?
2) Do you see the BIOS text at power up?
3) What error messages are you seeing?

After you have that information, please update the question with additional details. My thought is that you have a problem with one of the following:

- Hard disk failure
- Power supply failure

** Edit **

NTLDR is a system file that sites at the root level (C:\ntldr) of your hard drive. Based on that error message, I fear that your hard could be the problem on your system, especially if the restore disk isn't helping.

Given that you mentioned adding a video card, I'll assume you are comfortable enough to open the system to tell the manufacterer of the hard drive. Most hard drive vendors have disk diagnostic tools that can be used to check for errors on the disk. Here are links to common disk vendor sites for their utility downloads:
http://support.wdc.com/ - Western Digital (Data Life Guard)
http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/discwizard - Seagate (DiscWizard)
http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.jsp?locale=en-US&name=MaxBlast_5&vgnextoid=7add8b9c4a8ff010VgnVCM100000dd04090aRCRD - Maxtor (owned by Seagate now) (MaxBlast)

If you have another disk vendor, I'm sure you can find their utility with a search " disk utility" in Google.

Not responding to recovery disks?

To answer your question, you SHOULD be able to get all the drivers (free) from the HP website.

Assuming that the recover disk is not scratched or damaged, it could be an issue with your CD-ROM or some other component. Does it hang up? At what point? Does it boot into Windows normally?

no device driver will be needed for windows Xp.. if it was windows 98 then yes// windows XP is good for finding devices.. yes if she had a windows Xp to install on it it would work great i did it a thousand times.. all she has to do is insert the xp disk then it will ask if you want to delete all files 'you click yes" it formats it and then it start to install new windows XP.. there should be no problems.. some times a virus or a missing file in windows will make it not repsond thats why shes having problems with the recovery disk

Assuming the computer is working and the problem is not related to a hardware failure then yes the Windows installation CD will have most if not all of the drivers necessary to run the computer. Those drivers missing can be downloaded from the HP support web site.

If you want to see if all of your hardware is working properly download the knoppix live CD from http://www.knoppix.org/ and use the ISO to create a boot cd that will load an OS if it loads and works then your problem may not be hardware.
