i wish to extract the propellant from a 9mm round. i do not have the luxury of an appropriate tool so have been messing with a couple of pairs of pliers. in those rare moments when the voices in my head are silent i wonder whether this process might be a little dangerous. i did drop the pliers on my foot and that hurt.

When I pull down bullets, now I have a tool for it but before I did I did it this way:

Take a fired casing of nearly the same caliber you wish to pull. Slide the mouth of the empty over the bullet of the loaded cartridge, twist both with the same action you use to snap a one time use glow stick and you will loosen the neck of the casing on the bullet. You should be able to now remove it with yoru fingers and won't have those scuffs left by the pliers.

This is as far as I would go without tools, doing anything with the primer can cause it to detonate and can cause serious injury. Think of that primer pocket and primer as the world's smallest gun, yes that primer flies fast and damages whatever it hits.

Some one has already said that you are an accident waiting to happen, I concur. Why do you want to remove the powder? I will share a short story that is true and happened a few years ago. I was in the Army and worked at a training post. I had a detail of men breaking down 60 cal. rounds to use for a fire power demonstration. The rounds had to be broke down to 5 rounds. One of the rounds went off and hurt a man badly. I share this with you because this man had done this job many times and was very familiar with weapons, he got hurt and he was a professional. By your own admission you have already dropped a pair of pliers, are you waiting for the other shoe to drop? Do mess with some thing that could be lethal.

I was just wandering what you want to do with the slug if you do get it out? Anyway, bullets are seated pretty tight inside of their shells. But whatever you do, do not mess with the primer or accidentally smack it with the pliers. That will set the round off and you'll get a slug in your body, so just stay away from primers.

IT is not the safest thing to do if the round does go off its more like a small grenade than a bullet at the time. Most likely as long as you don't have your fist completely covering the bullet you will escape with minimal injuries. But there is always the chance of shrapnel in the eye or in the neck face.!

I WOULD JUST BUY THE GUN POWDER AT WALMART OR A Gun STORE!

Miss Lana, that guy is not "a accident waiting to happen." He is actively working toward HAVING the accident.

Put the cartridge and pliers away before you hurt yourself or an innocent bystander.

You must be kidding. You're just bored and are asking a stupid question in attempt to cure it right?

You should never try to screw around with live ammunition. Without proper tools you're just asking for an accident. If you really need the propellant, go to a gun store that sells smokeless powder or black powder.

do not use hard bullets !!! they can go off if you must just cut the tope off a plastic shotgun shell with a sharp knife or go to a gun range and buy some black powder for a powder rifle as it is safer to get than messing with shells

be careful...... the primer is in the pottom of the casing(on a spent shell you can see the indentation where the firing pit set off the primer to fire the round) avoid hitting the bottom and you should be fine.

You sound like a accident waiting to happen. Curriousity killed the cat you know.... Just buy a fire cracker and play with that.

find out if it is a rim-fire bullet (the primer is around the rim instead of center) if this is the case, i would suggest not, if it is center-fire i would be very careful but you have better chances. try going to a gun store or shooting range to safely find what your looking for
