there were 4 types of cannon ammunitiion, solid cannon balls; exploding rounds; chain, mostly used at sea where two solid cannon balls were chained together and packed tightly and fired together, designed to spin and take out sailing ship rigging and the answer you are looking for has two names cannister or grape
A. because they were loaded as a canister or B. because the shot was about the size of a grape

Canister
Simply a tinned-iron can full of iron or lead balls packed in sawdust. When fired, the effect is that of a giant shotgun blast. Canister is essentially short-range ammunition.

It was called Canister shot, it was used mostly in the smooth bore brass cast Napoleon cannon.
