Every night for the past couple of years, before I get to sleep I have these disturbing nightmares, often worse than any horror movie but always personal. Something dreadful is always happening to me or my family including the dog. Is this common and should I seek professional help?

It is not common. They sound like panic attacks. Are you under a lot of stress? Are you suffering from any type of anxiety? That is a long time for this to be occurring every night. I definitely would seek a psychologist or psychiatrist's opinion and help.

It might be hypnagogia or dreams as you fall asleep. You can look that up on Yahoo! search. But if they are always horrible and have occurred for years I would be concerned about my mental health.

Good luck, good health, peace and love!

I suffered from waking nightmares because I took Seroquel for a year. I couldn't tell if the nightmares were real or not. There is a certain medication you can take for nightmares. Ask your doctor which medication is best for this problem.

I believe you need to get your bible and read some psalms believe me this WILL HELP. PRAYER IS THE KEY
Try reading Psalm 91 and I promise you that it will help. I had a friend who had
bad nightmares and I told her the same and
she said it brought her Peace. God is a God of Peace call upon him to help you sleep well. Also Psalm 4. What do you have to lose. You will sleep like a baby
and thank God the next morning.
Jesus Loves You.

Nightmares before you go to sleep? I don't understand. Maybe you should try concentrating on a particular 'nice' story or scenario about half an hour before you go to bed. Run that story through your mind so that it consumes your thoughts.
