There are 3rd party financing groups that are available to lend money just like a credit card company.

If you have located a dental office that is right for you--- you might start by asking them which companies they work with and use their 3rd party financing companies.

A couple of the ones that we have worked with in our dental office are as follows:

Dental Fee Plan
Care Credit
Health Care Credit
Med Trust
Bank of America
Citi Bank

There are links below for your convenience. Care Credit and DFP (Dental Fee Plan) have performed well-- lenient in lending money and they offer 12 mo., 24 mo. and 36 mo. interest free plans---subject to application restrictions-- but worth looking at to see if you qualify.

I suppose what it is that you mean by serious dental work. One place that you can try first is a dental school, such as bryman, they are more that willing to take a look at your teeth for free and do any work that they can for free, this sort of work would be getting xrays, getting a cleaning, getting a cavity filled. There is ALWAYS a doctor chairside with the students, and they will be able to tell you what you need as far as dental work, and what dental work you should prioritize.

Assuming that you have fair to good credit, you might want to try to get Care Credit, which is accepted at many offices. Here's the web site:
