Trazadone is a mild antidepressant that is typically just used as a sleep agent. It might help you sleep, which could consequently help your depressive and anxious symptoms. If your depressive symptoms are more severe though, Trazadone is unlikely to cut it all by itself.
SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) are the first line medication for depression and anxiety. These include drugs like Prozac, Celexa, Lexapro, Paxil, Cipralex and Zoloft, as well as others.
It's also worth noting that research indicates that medication works best when used in conjunction with therapy.
I know a bit about both depression and anxiety. What else do you want to know?

Just like anything else, depression and anxiety are relative to the person. There are so many anti-depressants it's not even funny. The most recent ones that can combat depression and anxiety together are Lexapro, and Zoloft. You don't mention any that you might have tried, but trazodone is more what I would consider a sedative than an anti-depressant. Is this your general practitioner or have you tried finding a psychiatrist? If you're having trouble with psych meds the best thing to do is find a psychiatrist who deals with the different drugs every day....not one who relies on drug reps for information.

That is not a good question to ask here. You need to be in constant communication with your doctor. Everyone react different to medication. My aunt was on one for a while and all of the sudden she attempted suicide. It wasn't working for her so she stopped taking it and never called her doctor. Thank God she did not succeed. The next meds they gave her also didn't work. After several months they found one that did. What is good for one person may not work for you. If what you are taking is helping then don't worry about what other people take. If it is not, then all your doctor right away and try something else.

I tried all the SSRIs since I was 16 years old...they just work for a week due to the placebo effect and then stop...in fact I developed a worse problem from them...panic attacks/agoraphobia....I would try Lamictal...this is an off label use but is an up and coming drug that has been found to work...

I have had the misfortune to have suffered from severe depression all my life and my doctor has me on trazodone and serequil (may be misspelled) but the combination has enables me to lead a nearly normal life. I hope you are feeling better soon.

Everybody is different. One antidepressant that works well for me might not work for another person at all. Unfortunately this is a try and error process for you and your doctor until you find a proper one. I myself am on cymbalta after I tried four or five other antidepressant. This one helps me both with my depression as well as my ocd.
Good luck.

I was under the estimation that Trazadone
was for migraine headaches.
This is a very personal area. Everyone reacts differently to different meds.
They just keep trying til they find one that
works best.
And they all have side affects.

I was on Zoloft before, and it was ok but not great. I was then on Welbutrin, which was the best ever. My brother's on it now (I'm off them altogether) and he's doing well too. Ask if you can try Welbutrin for awhile, if you're looking for a change.

Stick to what your doctor has prescribed. Antidepressants are not candy, you know. If it is not working ask for a different prescription. How depressed and desperate can you be to post such a question here?
