My boyfriend is from Russia and he says that they would boil the mushrooms with an onion. If the onion turned black, the mushrooms were poisonous. Don't know if I would want to put that to the test or not!

There no easy way to tell if a mushroom is poisonous. If you're interested in learning to identify some mushrooms, a great book for beginners is called "All that the rain promises and more" by David Arora. It only includes common and tasty mushrooms that don't have poisonous lookalikes. Also, it's a really funny book.

You ONLY know what wild mushrooms are NOT poisonous if you go out in the woods with someone with a proven talent for knowing where to pick good mushrooms in this one area.

all the rest of the mushrooms out there are probably poisonour. If you don' tknow, or if you don't have somewone who knows and has proven he's right that mushrooms from a single area are not poisonout, you chould go upstairs and help someone else return to their loving family rather than test poisonous mushrooms.

research, of course. But it's also a good idea to go on a guided tour with an experinced mushroom picker. Many times, there are only one or two minor differences between poisonous & nonpoisonous mushrooms.

There's an old addage which states: There are old mushroom pickers and bold mushroom pickers, but never are there old, bold mushroom pickers.

I heard that you should never eat wild mushrooms because it is very hard to tell which are poisonous. That even experts have made the fatal mistake. Buy them at the grocery store.

I was afraid for years. I really wanted to know, like yourself. I tried Audubon books, Internet searches, and so on, but wasn't satisfied that I would be safe. I even got with a group of botanists from our local college, but still didn't feel safe. Then I found a old man with a bucket full of mushrooms at the local farmers market. I talked with him. And the next thing you know, I am out in the woods with him for about a year hunting 'rooms'. I taught him about things in the woods he didn't understand, and he taught me. Now, I hunt 'rooms' and offer to teach others.

My suggestion is find a hunter, outdoor person, etc., and learn from them. It's fun, safe, and you make a new friend.

Even veteran mushroom-pickers make mistakes sometimes. Buy a mushroom manual and stay away from shrooms you're not sure about.
