Why are garbanzo beans sometimes called chick peas?

I was eating dinner with the fam and while my brother was eating his salad he asked why garbanzo beans called chick peas? We all thought this was a good question, we thought for a while. My brother came up with that they look like chicks therefore they dawned the name chick peas, so for my little brother can anyone anwser my question. It would be greatly apriciated, thank you!

They were given the name chiche by the French, who apparently didn't like the Spanish word gabanzo, and Americans just anglicized it to chickpea.
