First of all most depictions of astral projection was a little dodgy at best. To be honest with you ask a Doctor or a Surgeon and they will tell you patients usually leave their bodies during surgery. Ultimately first hand accounts will be the deciding factor.

Man is a three part being comprised of body, spirit and heart. The body deals with this dimension while the spirit antimates the body. The heart is the essence of man and is to the spirit what the brain is to the body.
Not every human being is functional in the following aspects but has the potential to be so. The functions of mind reflect the functions of heart. Together the body, heart and spirit make up a human soul.
(1) The functions of the brain in the body are mind, will, and emotions.
(2) The functions of the heart in the spirit are conscience, intuition and communion.
This is something of a unified theory of human function set up to answer most religious, psychological and philosophical schematics of human function.

I think Spirit can exist apart from the body, while the body will die without spirit. The physical brain is a hard drive for the Spirit.

Are you referring to the spiritual principle in man which is called the soul or the Holy Spirit which we receive when we are baptised?
The unity of soul and body is so profound that one has to consider the soul to be the "form" of the body: i.e., it is because of its spiritual soul that the body made of matter becomes a living, human body; spirit and matter, in man, are not two natures united, but rather their union forms a single nature.
For the rest of the explanation please go to this link and look for section 362 and following.

The physical brain is equally a product of spirit, this whole system is entangled. Time is a degree of freedom of Quantum coherence it has no specified direction only degrees which are ambiguous.
A brain is a degree of freedom that spirit has, Spirit is a degree of freedom for the brain. Time makes room for both.
We don't see this because our veil is the decoherent classical macrosopic illusion of reality.

Why it could be GREASED LIGHTNING!
Yes the spirit is separate from the matter..
It's called electricity or amps. We all got it going on, and JESUS is the light source.. But he lets you decide for yourself.
John 1v 4In him was life; and the life was the light of men.
Just how much spiritual food do you want?
REV 3V
20Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.

Something that exists separately....we have awareness when we are not even conscious (dreams, out of body experiences, NDE's).... if awareness does not need a body, then I say the soul/spirit is separate.

The spirit is tied to the body. It can travel outside of it, but this is rare. All matter is energy, including our physical form. The spirit is another part of our 'physcial' body, but is on a different vibrational reality.

Your question is already biased as you have pre determined the existence of a spirit. Naturally only people who believe in such a thing will debate this with you.

the mind is a non local non temporal phenomenon, with ease we can travel back into our memorys, or dream of the future which may or may not come to pass... the brain is just a wrinkly peice of meat, caried around inside a bigger peice of meat. no electro-chemichal process however complex can explain the poetry of Hafiz, Shakespear's sonnets or the music of Bethoven. there must be more at work.
