In the movie "Face Off", there is a scene where everything is being shot up in the house and in the middle of it all is a boy wearing headphones.
And you hear the song "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" playing even in the midst of all the gunfire.
The boy seems to be unaware of the danger and is lost in the sound of the music, not the gunfire.
His word is bliss.

There are seven levels of consciousness....seven being the highest.
Ignorance is not the lowest level of consciousness...
False wisdom is the lowest level of consciousness...
When a person rises from the 1st level of consciousness which is false wisdom to the 2nd level of consciousness which is ignorance, then a person is said to be in state of "Bliss"......
Therefore "Ignorance is Bliss"
This is when a person has surfaced from a very dark state within his or her being..........
You ask for the "True" meaning of this often used phrase, and now you have the "True" meaning of this often used phrase.....
I hope it serves you well in the future

Ignorance is bliss is a phrase that comes from Thomas Gray's poem, "Ode on a Distant Prospect of Eton College" (1742): "Where ignorance is bliss, 'tis folly to be wise."

I find this to be true - knowledge and truth have the capacity to be brutaly honest, and there are certain things you learn in life that you sometimes wish you could just un-learn. Even in our present society, there are informations that are filtered, classified, and hidden, not in the desire to promote ignorance, but to save most people from the burden of handling truth.
On the other hand, this phrase may also be a form of the learned's sarcasm and a way to show-off...like saying, "ah, you know nothing." or "you just don't get it, do you?!"

Stupid airheaded people seem to have fun, but in reality (especially in the real world) nerds like me have all the fun, because we RULE the real world!
So, while ignorance may be bliss, knowledge is definitely power (and bliss).

My Baptist gf uses it all the time, especially when I start talking about Philosophy.
It means that a person can be happy not knowing what will happen at the end. Like "it won't hurt them if they don't know"

That it is comforting to be ignorant as you don't realise the evil and badness of this world.
Thats why christians are so blissful
