GREENHOUSE EFFECT
The warming of the atmosphere by the trapping of longwave radiation being radiated to space. The gases most responsible for the greenhouse effect are water vapor and carbon dioxide.

OZONE
A molecule made up of three atoms of oxygen. Ozone occurs naturally in the stratosphere and provides a protective layer shielding the Earth from harmful ultraviolet radiation. In the troposphere, it is a chemical oxidant, a greenhouse gas, and a major component of photochemical smog.

RADON
A gaseous, radioactive alpha particle-emitting element with a half-life of about four days. Radon exists naturally in many locations, and may present a serious health risk when it accumulates in basements or crawl spaces beneath homes.

PESTICIDE
A general term for insecticides, herbicides and fungicides. Insecticides kill or prevent the growth of insects. Herbicides control or destroy plants. Fungicides control or destroy fungi. Some pesticides can accumulate in the food chain and contaminate the environment.

BIODEGRADABLE
Waste material composed primarily of constituent parts that occur naturally, are able to be decomposed by bacteria or fungi, and are absorbed into the ecosystem. Wood, for example, is biodegradable, while plastics are not.

ACID
A substance, which releases hydrogen ions when dissolved in water. Most acids will dissolve the common metals and will react with a base to form a neutral salt and water. An acid is the opposite of an alkali, has a pH rating lower than 7.0, will turn litmus paper red, and has a sour taste.

BASE
A substance which releases hydroxyl ions when dissolved in water. Bases react with acids to form a neutral salt and water.

ACID RAIN
Air pollution produced when acid chemicals are incorporated into rain, snow, fog or mist. The "acid" in acid rain comes from sulfur oxides and nitrogen oxides, products of burning coal and other fuels and from certain industrial processes.

There is a lot going on here and your girlfriend is as out of control as her parents and grandfather. Why didn't you talk to police? Why didn't you try to get her out of there and call police on your own? Hitting herself in the head is not a sign of solid mental health. She needs to call child protective services, go to an abuse shelter or go to the hospital to show them the obvious wounds. Of all this going on, she must be covered in bruises and pretty banged up. The police did the right thing in taking her to the hospital. That way, she can get the help she needs, can talk to people who can help her and get through this. She does need mental health care. After all that has been done to her and the way she reacted, anyone would need some mental help. It's not a bad thing! If her grandmother wants her and can take care of her, then she needs to stand up, speak out and start fighting for her. She's the adult and needs to act like it. Since the grandmother has not done this, I can't say for certain whether she wants your girlfriend to live with her or that she is much better than the parents or grandfather. If she cared that much, she would be fighting for her right now and would be involved in getting this girl some help. But, she isn't. There is nothing you can do about this. This for the social worker, the grandmother, your girlfriend and doctors to work out. By the by, she can always ask for another case worker. You can't know for certain what will happen with the parents or the grandfather. They might be arrested later. An investigation will certainly occur.
