It's for my cousins baby who I've never seen and have not seen her for over 5 years. Also, if we went we were to bring a dish to pass. Or would a birthday card sent in the mail do it?

if you haven't seen your cousin in 5 yrs and have never even met the baby, i'm guessing you're not that close to one another. it isn't expected for you to send a gift if you can't attend. you can just send a card to celebrate the occasion. when a baby turns one, the parents tend to invite everyone they can think of. sometimes just so no one feels left out. i know a girl who even rented out a banquet hall and invited about 150 people when her son turned one. a little overkill if you ask me. what does a baby need all that for?

Simply if you were invited by invitation card or verbally from that person but cannot attend send the birthday card in the mail to say thank you for the invitation, sorry you could not attend, and best wishes. If you are have a close relationship with this person include something flat with the card such as a gift voucher or a photo if you're sending by mail.

1st Birthdays are a big deal so you tend to over invite. If you are not close and have not even seen the baby a card with $10 or so is good. If you go a little gift would sufice. Then again if you weren't invited to the baby shower or to come and see the baby once it was born I would just make a believable excuse and send a card and that is it.

A BD card is fine. Obviously a close relationship does not exist. Include a telephone number, maybe a relationship is in the waiting - - - if you want.

Gift - not yet.
