Or do you wait until they at least finish a sentence to tell them you're not interested?

(I'm a telemarketer, and I don't mind if you tell me you're not interested, but what REALLY irks me is when I'm saying, "Hi my name is ___ and I'm....(this is where the person interrupts and says) "No. We're not interested" CLICK.

You don't even know WHO I AM or WHY I'm calling! Plus, you've just interrupted me in the middle of a sentence!
I know..I know...about how everyone thinks it's the telemarketer that's rude and to some extent I agree (I'm in the process of getting another job because this is just getting to me) but still...does one person's job that YOU don't like warrant you being rude to someone just becuase they're doing their job?

I always let them finish their first sentence and politely decline when they pause to catch their breath.

I really don't like telemarketers. I don't dislike them because they call and interrupt my dinner or call at inconvenient times, or even because they're telemarketers--at least they're actually working and paying taxes, even if it IS a crummy job. What I don't like is that they're trying to sell me something, or call to tell me I've won a free vacation to Jamaica and all I have to do is attend a timeshare to receive it! First of all, NOTHING is free, and secondly, if I wanted to apply for a MasterCard or put new siding on my house or donate to the Disabled Veterans of America, I'd do the research and take the initiative myself to do/buy what I wanted.

I feel sorry for you making cold calls over the phone. It's one of the worse sales job ever (well, maybe not as bad as knocking on doors, facing a real red-face person, selling cell phone plans and then getting the door slammed on you). Even the most-tempered person will find telemarketing quite a stressful job with the majority of your potential customers hanging up on you before you even announce your name of your company and the product you're trying to sell...just so you can pay for your next meal!

A lot of people don't like buying something over the phone, having their time interrupted and wasted if they're are in a middle of something such as watching TV, already in financial debt, expecting actual guests to arrive, etc. Basically people don't like being harrassed by unwanted phone calls. It's all to do with timing so......

Time to change jobs where you'd be more appreciated. If you like talking to people, retailing or providing a service in a store may be more suitable. Customers approach and you receive them - you'd be meeting their demands not forcing them.

Good luck!

you might know me .... I'm the telemarketers worst phone call!! I'll ask *them* personal questions ("are you married? you sound so cute!") tell them ALL about my day ("and then, she said .... can you believe it?") or offer them whatever stuff my kids are selling @ school ("i'll buy yours if you'll buy mine").
I used to be rude and just hang up once I realized it a was marketing call, but now I try to have a good time and help ya'll telemarketers enjoy your day. I always visualize a telemarketer going home at the end of the day and telling their spouse - "you won't believe the phone I had to make today, OMG, that chick was crazy!"

I do like wasting their time. Sometimes I'll just jack with a telemarketer for a while, pretending I'm interested and just a little bit crazy, then I gradually turn up the crazy until they hang up on me. Kind of like Jerky Boys in reverse. It's a good time.

No I let them telling me why they are calling MY house and then tell them whether I want to hear the rest of what they have to say or not. I don't even know how it happens as I am on the DO NOT CALL LIST....

BTW I have also done OUTBOUND call center work, and it is not my choice career either. INBOUND work can be interesting though. There is such crazy characters out there...

I understand that you are doing a job, but I pay for my telephone for my convenience; I do not pay the bill to give your company a marketing tool.

I attempt to let the telemarketers finish their first sentence. If I am not interested I say "Good Luck on your next call" and then say good-bye.

It depends. If it's one of those telemarketers that gives you that lovely "dead air" at the beginning then I don't feel so bad.

Think about how considerate THAT is. You call someone to deal your pitch, and then you make them wait in dead air until you are ready for them.

It goes both ways.

i must admit, when i realize it's a telemarketer, i do say no thanks and hang up. i've tried letting them finish a sentence and then saying no thank you but it doesn't work. they don't take no thank you for an answer and keep it up. i know you guys have a job to do and i'm sure it isn't a fun one but, in my experience,it's been best not to let the conversation get started in the first place. sorry.

Yes uh huh. I believe that's what the do not call list is intended for: unwanted calls from telemarketers. Don't take it personally. It's not you. It's the job.

I always try to give the courtesy of at least listening because I realize they are dong their job. I do get annoyed if they continue to trying to push a sale after I've told them I'm not interested.
