Would it be es cuanto cuesta una cosa
or es cuantA cuesta una cosa because it is cosA...
Just basically, do I use cuanto or cuanta? Maybe a little explanation too...?

When "cuanto" is used to ask the geral question how much does something cost, it is always "cuanto". When it is used as an expression such as "Cuantas lindas mujeres hay esta noche" (how many beautiful women there are tonight") then cuantas as to agree gender-wise.
Here are some examples to help you figure it out better:
Cuanto cuestan estas sabanas? How much are these sheets?
Cuantas sabanas hay? How many sheets are there?
Cuantas sabanas hay! There are so many sheets!
Cuanto cuesta este coche? How much is this car?
Cuanto cuestan estos coches? How much are these cars?
Cuanto cuestan estos coches! How expenseive these cars are!

You use cuanto. I speak Spanish but I'm not sure about the rules but I know it's cuanto. For the explanation ask An advanced placement (AP) Spanish teacher if you are in high school or a Spanish college professor if you're in college.

You would use "lo que" in here, "cuánto" only in the question:
Es lo que cuesta una cosa
¿Cuánto cuesta una cosa?
You dont use "cuanta", not even in the question cause you have the verb behind the "cuánto" no "cosa".
¿Cuántas cosas ... ? then yes, you use it in feminine.

that thing = esa cosa
this thing = esta cosa
