Because it means their bible must be symbolic and not inerrant history (gasp!).
Never mind that during the first couple hundred years of christianity the bible was viewed as a symbolic message and not historically accurate... Unfortunately the religion got warped along the way, and the blind followers shuffle along wanting to believe it's the indelible truth that it so obviously isn't.
They fear that their beliefs may be challenged. It's seems such a foolish thing, that the entire religion would be wronged somehow just because they'd instead have to take the first couple chapters (which are woefully inconsistent with each other and reality to begin with) aren't real history, but it's a legit fear to them.
It's a shame to persist in the harmful delusion of religion to begin with, but inflexibility in the face of observable reality is just an open declaration of ignorance or stupidity...
EDIT:
>>"Evolution claims, random change & natural selection make simple things spontaneously transform into more complex things without recourse to intelligent design"
Evolution has never claimed anything of the sort. Natural Selection is, by its own definitive nature, NON-RANDOM. It's *selection*! It's in the damn name and not a terribly difficult thing to grasp.
The reason we have to "defend" evolution is because so many people don't even know what it is. You are obviously part of the majority of America that could not identify the proper definition for evolution when given a list! =P

I am a Christian and absolutely do not believe in evolution. It is the biggest lie Satan ever told! There is NO proof for this religion. (yes! evolution is a religion.)
All the Earth points to intelligent design. Take, for example, the eyeball. It is so complex that you would have to be blind to believe that this came by chance over millions of years.
Here is an experiment to help you realize that evolution is impossible. Go to the ocean and jump in with a weight belt on. Then just wait for evolution to change your body to adapt to the environment. It should take about 3,000,000 yrs.
Sound stupid? Well why do you believe that it happened the other way around? You could spend a million years throwing fish out of the ocean but you will never get a fish that can breath air. All you will get is a beach full of dead fish, and those dead fish will NEVER grow legs and walk off.
One of the biggest examples i hear of evolution is the many beaks of the Finch. Yes! the finch has many different variates, but they are all Finches. There has never been a Finch that became a dog or had puppies.
Christians believe: "In the beginning GOD"
Atheist believe: "In the beginning dirt"
Open your eyes to the truth!

Christianity isn't at odds with evolution. Some individuals who happen to be Christian do see evolution and creation as being mutually exclusive. This, however, is their problem.
Stephen Hawking has told of a conference he attended at the Vatican where the pope told the participants it was "all
right to study the evolution of the universe after the big bang, but we should not inquire into the big bang itself because that was the moment of Creation and therefore the work of God." (from A Brief History of Time)
The people we call Creationists today fail to grasp the role of metaphor in all we understand about ourselves. They seek to interpret their holy books literally while most of us see these translations as allegory.
p.s. Why do so many people limit the scope of evolution to Darwinism? The universe has been evolving since its inception. Actually the order of this evolution affirms the faith of many in a "higher being." Also, evolution does NOT teach that man is a descendant of apes.

That was wrote by the wiseth man in the world.
1 Kings 3:12 "I will do what you have asked. I will give you a wise and discerning heart, so that there will never have been anyone like you, nor will there ever be"
*I in the above verse is GOD.
John 3:16 .“For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life".so when we believe in JESUS we have eternal life.JESUS lived a sinless life and gave up his life as a sacrifice so we can be sin free. Ask JESUS to come into your heart and forgive ur sins and
cleanse ur past with his blood.
With a simple prayer like above u can be saved.JESUS loves u and wants u to be saved.

There is no evidence for evolution, your guy Darwin didn't believe his own theory in the end. As a Christian I believe in a form of evolution, like progress for man kind, but I know the big boom didn't happen. and I'm not scared, because there is no evidence at all.

i'm afraid you're incorrect. besides the indisputable fact that faith and technological expertise do not contradict of their respective degrees, they accomplish that of their ideologies (be it intentional or casual). faith supplies messages, along with the message of guy being above animals (as guy has a soul and ethics). technological expertise supplies a probability factors, along with the reason of species variability for this reason of random mutations and organic determination (with the consequential message of guy being neither better nor inferior than different animals). So message-smart, technological expertise contradicts faith, unwillingly. yet how moral is this message that faith supplies us? Is it not the theory that there are better and inferior races? Did this not kill dissimilar human beings? yet technological expertise shows that guy isn't purposefully the following, guy is a outcome of random mutations, we are no extra efficient than any animal we are diverse animals.

I don't believe Christians are scared of evolution. It's visa verse. That's' why you are at Religion & Spirtually section defending evolution.
Evolution claims, random change & natural selection make simple things spontaneously transform into more complex things without recourse to intelligent design. Chance and random changes simply do not produce higher levels of organization & complexity.

I'm not scared of it. It's false.
Scientists used to believe that the world was flat. Evolution will turn out the same way as that idea if true Christian scientists speak up against it.
