I was just about to grill these portabellos that I just bought yesterday and just now noticed the sticker on one package says packed on 4-12 and the other packages (of 2) say packed on 4-19. And it's like May 3rd today. I'm not sure about the shelf life of portabello mushrooms. What would you do? Go ahead and make them or return them to the store and get some fresher ones? I just don't want to eat something if it may make me sick.

The date that they're packaged on and the date that they expire aren't the same thing. Mushrooms, like other vegetables and fruits, stay good for quite awhile after they're picked, packaged, and shipped.

If the mushrooms aren't slimy or have a pecular odor to them, the odds are good that they're just fine. If they're thoroughly cooked, that will also insure that they're all right to eat.

With mushrooms it is very easy to determine if they are bad or not.
First, they get slimy--throw away
Second, they may smell a bit 'off'. throw away.

if they are still firm, holding their shape, aren't slimy, then they are fine. Based on the date, though, their days are numbered!

It's not like meat...I would cook them unless they were slimy and gross. Usually mushrooms just dry up.

If they're slimy, dark, or spotted or too soft, toss 'em.

As long as they are not mushy or mouldy, you should be okay.
