(1) If you have a security clearance and access to sensitive information on a regular basis, and whoever you're dating is considered a security risk, yes.

(2) If you are married and you are committing adultery, yes. Adultery is punishable under the UCMJ, and is NOT considered acceptable.

Other than that, no one cares.

EDIT: Each service branch has their own investigative branch (i.e. CID) but background checks for all are conducted by DSS (Defense Security Service) http://www.dss.mil/

Actually the FBI doesn't investigate clearances in bulk. OPM investigates clearances 99% of the time (sometimes they contact sub-agencies and DSS does some clearance investigations as well). Now, the investigator can interview anyone who knows about you. If you provide them with a reference in your security clearance SF86 and they interview that person--they can choose to interview another person who your reference knows who also knows you. They also interview random neighbors of places where you have lived. Each service does not investigate their own people for security clearances, that's actually incorrect. However, if you are already active duty you can be investigated by your respective service's investigative office (OSI for AF, CID for Army, and NCIS for Navy). This if for criminal type reasons though (i.e. adultry, porn, drugs, fraud).

Even for clearances they do not check-out the current people you date, they check out your background, your last three jobs. Stuff like that. Going into the army they already know if you did anything against the law or not.

It depends on what your job description is. For example if you work in a field that requires you to get clearances then yes..probably. If you are married and you are thinking about cheating on your spouse again yes.

They can dig as deep as they deem necessary based on the importance and security of your job.

Having said that, I would have to believe the US Navy doesn't employ Muslim pilots, flying off carriers, as a normal practice. Is that considered profiling or just good common sense ?

yes.....and what SPC Bum is wrong in that the FBI does not conduct background checks for the military. Each branch has their own investigative service.
