I have a 71 super.. here are my tips:

1) Change the oil every other month. Oil is the life of these cars. The cleaner the better it will run and the longer it will last. Clean the oil screen too.. that's where the sludge builds up.

2) Put in electronic ignition (about $50 to $70) and eliminate the problem of points. That way when the timing is set, the timing is SET. You will get your best ignition and keep it. After that watch your cap and plugs. When you get a tune up don't forget to check the pushrods (under the valve covers)

3) Keep the engine clean. A clean engine runs cooler and that makes for efficiency. It also helps you to spot leaks and address them. Most leaks are solved by simply tightening up something (a little at a time). A can of engine cleaner and a local coin operated car wash (and a change of clothes) will do the job for under $20.

4) If something is broken - fix it. Everything is interconnected. For example... If your wipers are old and don't work well, they draw more power.. that makes the alternator work harder which takes power from the engine.. and so on..

5) Check your gas tank. Some of the older ones had venting problems and lose gas due to this (you WILL smell this problem if the tank is full). You can buy repair kits that will solve it.

6) Your tires: Keep them properly inflated and aligned. You would not believe how much this can scr*w with your mileage.

That's it from my end.. go enjoy your bug...

keep it in top condition. plugs every 20k, points and condensor every 5k. run clean fuel. these engines are very simple, and easy to keep running. they are air cooled, which makes them run hotter than liquid cooled engines. this alone makes them less environmentally friendly. that is why they cannot be imported into the states, even if they were in production today. up until about 4 or 5 years ago, you could still buy a new old-style beetle in mexico. they were bad about valves hanging open, and burning. still is an e-z fix.
