You don't have to say goodbye, just, I will see you soon. He will be upset enough at leaving his family and friends.

The party sounds wonderful, but give him something in private between mother and son, a little photo, or something that is special to you that you can give to him.

Yes, give a going away party. You can call it a Good Luck Party rather than a Farewell Party. The atmosphere would certainly be more postive.

How about a Bon Voyage Party? If he is going to Italy for example, have an Italian themed party or go to an Italian restaurant for a party.

Hope that helps. It will bring good memories and great photos of the occasion.

It depends on the person, I personally think there is no problem with it, its actually a nice thing to do. I say go for it if your son likes party's and would appreciate it, besides 2 years is a long time.

Of course you don't want to say goodbye, but have a party for him. Not time to think about you mom.

It's best to say goodbye in a way that all of his friends can be there to support him too. Telling him goodbye is a good idea though, that way he knows that you all care about him and support him.

Don't consider it a going away party, but rather a celebration of his upcoming adventure. It would probably be really nice for him to have a chance to see everyone before he takes off for such a long time.

I think it depends on the reason he is going overseas. If he is going to Iraq, I wouldn't have a "party", but a gathering of sorts.

Yes, it is appropriate. I am sure that it will be hard but you should at least make an appearance. You can leave early, but you should show up. It will mean a lot to him.

Yea, I would think it would be a great idea. Let him know how much you and his friends will miss him...it will show how much you care if he knows the time you spent planning
