Wow, what a tough choice!! My top 5 are Andre Derain, Maurice de Vlaminck (both fauves), Umberto Boccioni, Giacomo Balla (both Italian Futurists) and Pablo Picasso.
Wow, to pick one.... I love the genius of Picasso but Boccionis work is so powerful it mesmerizes me when I see it. If you've ever seen "The City Rises" or "Dynamism of a Cyclist" or "Unique forms of Continuity in Space" you'll see why I'm picking Umberto Boccioni as favorite. I aspire to be that great someday.

Tough question to single out a single artist, but I would have to say Edward Hopper, because I was first introduced to his work as a high school student, and I suppose all high school age children are able to relate to the loneliness and solitude that is reflected in each of his works.
But, the French impressionists are all pleasant and Van Gogh is disturbing and thought provoking in a good way :)

Salvadore Dali & William Blake. Both have surrealism down to a tee.

Carole Grigg.. like her use of white space rather than detailed backgrounds and watercolor that also evokes an oriental peacefulness.

Escher. It's like celtic MODERN art I can relate to. He plays with patterns, repetition and makes chaos out of continuity. I envision myself lost inside them.

I would have to say Picasso, because he broke all the rules. That must have been an amazing time to be a painter in Paris....
