It's not a religion or creed in it's own right,so there is nothing purportedly "sacred" about it. I would think they could care less how it is spelled. And I can think of any number of grammatically incorrect versions. Anyway people are always reversing i and e. We could do worse, you know. How about athyeaism? Athaissum? Gee,we could actually have some fun with this - maybe even a contest!

If an Atheist is upset - then they are wired like a democrat being upset being called a republican (and visa versa), or an Arab person being called a Jewish person. A Korean being called Japanese.
It is part of who they are - stronger than in other people. Same as if I called you a trait you are not or don't like - you'd be upset too.
They are human remember - easily upset about everything.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but if you will go to Merriam-Webter's online dictionary, you will find that religion can be defined as "a cause, principle, or system of beliefs held to with ardor and faith", and faith can be defined as a "firm belief in something for which there is no proof". I believe there is no god, and I cannot prove there is no god. Therefore, atheism is a religion. If you don't like this fact, too bad. As for your question, I don't get offended by anyone's inability to spell. You can get the point across without spelling something correctly.

Well, atheists want to look smart and they think that pointing out things in grammar does that. In case you didn't notice their big deal is how smart they are. Most aren't but usually a fool can not see a fool.

It bothers me that people on here are too lazy to even click the "Check Spelling" button, yet they think we would actually be interested in reading what they have to write.

I'm annoyed at all ignorance. I'm annoyed if someone misspells "atheist," "weird," or "belligerent."

How hard is it to click on "Check Spelling"? If someone is going to insult all of us with blatant ignorance, then I will take offense.

Incidentally, I'm also annoyed if someone misspells Buddha or Mary Magdalene.

If you want to look like an ignoramus who can't spell - go for it. I'm sure Dog and Jeezus won't mind.

Atheists appreciate intelligence. If you can't properly spell a term, you obviously don't have enough knowledge to be discussing it. The "check spelling" feature isn't hard to use.

Well, for me it's usually an "and your little dog too" moment - you know, "Your argument is faulty, your facts are wrong, oh, and learn how to spell 'atheist'."

EDIT: and while we're getting going about spelling, it's Gandhi, not Ghandi.

It doesn't upset me, but it's so easy to take the time and spell words correctly.

I'm annoyed at ANY misspelled term. I'm a grammarian. Hello? There's a "check spelling" right there!

"I would think they could care less how it is spelled."

We COULD care less? Don't you mean "I would think they couldn't care less..."? *laughs at you*
