Why is australia not considered an island?

Well islands are normally caused by volcanos that erupt so much underwater that they break the surface (ie. Hawaii). Australia is so large (and not volcanic) it is considered to be a continent.

Australia is considered to be an island by most people and is often called the Island Continent. While volcanoes can produce islands, many islands are not volcanic in origin - the British Isles are a good example - and the presence or absence of volcanoes has nothing to do with the definition of an island. Besides, there are volcanoes in Australia. Mt Gambier in South Australia is a volcano as are many of the mountains in northeastern NSW and southeast Queensland - Mt Warning, Mt Lindsay and the Glasshouse Mountains to name a few. The Australian volcanoes are mostly extinct.

Well, technically, it is, it is also one of the five or is it seven continents of the world, Australia does not have boarders with any other country and we are surrounded by seas and oceans, so I can't see how we are not an Island.
