Peopl all have different reasons for church... The point is, who cares what the reason is... As long as you are committing yourself and dedicating your time to be there.. Hey when I was younger, I went to church to meet girls, but low and behold, the Word of God seeped into my brain... so, The reason for going doesn't matter... It's the outcome, or the result of you going that does.

"I saw this on the news about chrisatians and it said 75% of people who go to church do it for selfish reasons?"
Which means there has to be 25% who don't go for selfish reasons. Why not judge the church by them rather than those who go for the wrong reason?

"statisics say that your lying there is no differance between atheist and christians when it comes to criminal offenses"
No, all the statistics say is that at most some Christians are lying, not all Christians are lying.

there may be people who go to church for their own selfish reasons- but remember that remnant of 25% that you did not mention. Those "Christians" that live no different than the world, will be held accountable by God. Those 25% are pleasing God- and when you look at them hopefully you will see the reason we should go to church and live a different life- because Jesus came to die for us, to save us from our sins, and transform us into the person that He has created us to be. By the way about church changing anyone- we cannot let a church be the change agent- it must be us desiring to change by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Practically speaking all sentient beings are 100 per cent selfish. As far back as the Kinsey report on human sexuality it was established that what people say does not match what they do. All this is pretty much reflected by Scripture where the Lord notes that people talk a good game but their heart is far from him.

I know a lot of people whose lives were drastically changed by personal experience but that is not happening in the main stream. Find a place where it is, but be ready to be held to a higher standard and willing to separate from all the good 'ol boys you run with now..

And there is the media telling what they think the populus wants to hear. How popular would it be for them to actually proclaim that people DO in fact change when they are saved? Then we get the ripple effect. Tell people that most people in church aren't for real - so then THEY won't go - I mean why would they if 75% of the people in that church would be going for selfish reasons anyways? Oh and then - that gives people this crazy idea that they can degrade the church because of these lame statistics - I mean - come on - do you REALLY think that if someone was going for selifsh reasons they would admit it? What is this doing? It is contributing to the creation of cynics! It allows them to justify their reason for staying out of church - to do whatever they want - to be held accountable or responsible for nothing they do.

Who made up the reasons that fit into their definition fo being selfish?

It is stuff like this when we just sit back and shake our heads - aren't people smart enough to make up their own minds about what they want to do? Do we all really need the media telling us what to think and which way to turn? What is attractive, what to buy what to wish and hope for blah blah blah....what WAS the point of this article anyways?

Why in the world would you come to the conclusion that people are lying?

Yes, many people go to church because they see it as a social engagement. Not for spiritual growth.

How, exactly, is that a lie?

I agree that only a small percentage really get "into" their faith. But that doesn't make the others liars. It just makes them afraid of change.

THink about it. Does anyone do anything for unselfish reasons??

Why do people go to church? For their own salvation, for their own amusment (meeting friends), for the comraderie - and these are all self-motivated reasons.
Who would bother to attend church if you WERENT offered Heaven as a reward??

And, statistics show that 70% of the prison population is Christian, and 0.2% Atheist.

Everyone goes to church for several reasons including to better yourself. If bettering yourself, learning, are selfish then I'll buy that statistic. I also go to church to help others.

The point is that when I leave church I am better prepared to help others in the community.

Define selfish. I'm not a christian, but I think that pretty much everything that anyone does comes down to self-interest, if only to stop feeling guilty for not performing the required altruistic act. This isn't limited to church-goers, but they aren't exempt either.

I go to church to help me become a selfless person. Church has helped me achieve this. I admit that there is more progress I need to do in that area, but I don't do it for a selfish reason. I do it to learn more about God and live in God's way.
