i used to use Purina dog chow & upgraded to Purina One, Lamb & Rice at my vet's suggestion....after all this recall stuff, i invested 5-6 hrs of research & came up with Canidae dry dog food, all life stages...this food can be eaten by puppies, young, older, senior & or dogs that need to lose weight !!! it has all human grade ingredients, made in the USA, no fillers or salt or beet pulp, etc....check it out at Canidae.com...it was rated 5 stars out of 6 possible on one survey and rated 112 out of 100 possible, that's an A+, on another survey.....many people at Yahoo answers say they have used it for many yrs and are very pleased with it.....my 2 dogs like it, & my JRTerrier loves it !!! ...check Metropetservices.com for more information and locations & prices near you...they have free delivery also !!!...any more questions...email me !!!

To my understanding the only two purina foods that have been recalled are Nestlé Purina PetCare Company
Alpo® Brand Prime Cuts In Gravy Canned Dog Food (March 30, 2007)
Mighty Dog® 5.3 Ounce Pouch Products (March 16, 2007) But you can go to the following site to see the complete list of recalled products.

soy products are now under suspicion as well. Here is a site with the latest updates, gets them faster than the Vet site or FDA:

If you decide to go with a home cooked diet, be aware that some melamine contaminated food was fed to pigs and chickens that millions of people have eaten and that are still on the market. So if you get meat, get it at whole foods where the food source of the animals is known. Do this for yourself and for your pets.
I have 55 lb dogs and I feed them the following amounts of food, one each from each food group:
Meats (one cup per dog, raw measure)
Chicken, Turkey (main meats fed), lamb, beef (rarely feed), tilapia-boneless filets (rarely feed), Venison, Rabbit, Duck
Veggies (1/4 cup combined -1 yellow and 1 green veggie)
Yellow: yellow squash, carrots, acorn squash
Green: peas, asparagus, green beans, zucchini, broccoli florets, alfalfa sprouts, celery
Starch (1/4 cup)
White potatoes, Sweet potatoes, Rice, Macaroni
Fruit: Cranberry, 1/4 cup added to food
Other fruits fed as treats: Bit of melon, apple slices, frozen banana slices
--------------------------------
Supplements: Either 3V Caps Skin Formulation, has Omega 3, Vit A, D and E.. OR.. Norwegian Cod Liver Oil, 1 Tablespoon mixed in food.
Brewer's Yeast powder (from store for humans) 1 Tablespoon mixed in food
Ester C Supplement
In a.m. I give them Oatmeal 1/2 cup
mix in yogurt or acidophilis
3x week raw egg (or you can scramble)
3x week I feed raw sliced and cubed beef heart, 1/4 cup each. This has taurine in it which is good for dogs and cats. Taurine is ESSENTIAL for cats.

I don't feed ,y dog any Purina anything. It is a low quality dog food. Look at the ingredients and the first 5 make up the whole thing. Tell me if you see any corn, gluten, Corn meal.... anything like that. I jus think it is a low quality food and there are much much better ones. Like these here. (They are in order, best to least) Canidae Royal Canin Innova Solid Gold Back to basics Wellness Advoderm Life's Abundance Wysong Good luck! Canidae is one of the best that I know of. These are all HIGH quality but Canidae is the very best one for your dog. Quality foods should contain very little to NONE of the following: Food fragments - lower-cost by-products of another food manufacturing process, such as brewer's rice and wheat bran...Manufacturers usually include at least one fragment to help lower costs. Beware any food that includes several fragments. Meat by-products (not handled as carefully as whole meat) - any food that contains meat by-products as the MAJOR protein source indicates a low-quality product. HIGH-QUALITY FOODS SHOULD NOT CONTAIN: Fats or proteins named generically (ex. animal fat/poultry fat instead of beef fat/ lamb meal) Artificial preservatives (BHA, BHT, ethioxyquin) Artificial colors. Sweeteners (corn syrup, sucrose, ammoniated glycyrrhizin) to improve unappealing food Propylene glycol - a toxic substance when consumed in large amounts; added to some "chewy" foods to keep them moist.

I do not believe it is on recall. Here's a full & up-to-date list of all products currently under recall:
http://www.avma.org/aa/petfoodrecall/products.asp
Try to avoid foods with wheat gluten, corn gluten, and rice protein concentrate, since those are the ingredients under suspicion.
