I just got my wisdom teeth out today, and I was wondering just in case.

Thanks!

That means the blood clot, which is suppose to form over the hole, has become dislodged.
This article tells you step by step what to do, but basically you need to return to the oral surgeon right away.

I had 'dry socket' after having a tooth removed and it was incredibly painful. Apparently it's quite common and you're very wise to be asking about it.

If you suspect you might have it - you'll know because the pain will get worse - you MUST go back to your dentist; even if they're busy insist they see you.

Your dentist will then apply something to the socket that will soothe it and keep it from becoming too dry; you may have to go back a few times to have it reapplied.

I was on painkillers for several days when I had this problem, and took a mixture of Paracetemol and Nurofen. If the pain is really bad, dentists can actually prescribe much more powerful painkillers, though, which is worth knowing.

first few days of removing your teeth, there will be a dry socket. try not it pick at it and let your body heal on it's own. it is important to keep it clean by regular rinsing. within the 24 hrs of extraction, you would want to stay away from mouth wash and alcohol for this will not help you heal nicely. try not to eat hot or spicy food, it will cause more bleeding. for 1 week try to keep to sodium down, it will cause more swelling. what is important is ice! keeping cold on the area will help further swelling. 15 mins on 20 mins off. do this all day if possible. take a 600mg ibuprofen (generic for advil) every 4-6 hrs this helps with the pain and swelling. 500mg tylenol works too. you can take a higher dose if you have a high tolerance for drugs.

KATHLEEN,
A DRY SOCKET WILL DEVELOP IF THE CLOT OVER THE BONE IS REMOVED, AND THE AREA IS NOT ALLOWED TO PROPERLY HEAL.
DRY SOCKETS, IF THEY OCCUR, DO SO 1-2 DAYS AFTER EXTRACTION. THE DENTIST MUST PUT A SPECIAL HEALING MATERIAL INTO THE BARE BONE SOCKET SO IT WILL HEAL.
THIS CONDITION IS VERY, VERY PAINFUL AND YOUR DENTIST MUST BE CONTACTED IMMEDIATELY IF IT HAPPENS.
